Happy Christmas
As perhaps the poster boy for independent cinema in the last seven to eight years, it’s crazy to realize that lo-fi filmmaker Joe Swanberg has never been in competition at the Sundance Film Festival before. While two of his films have played in Park City previously (though one was a short segment in “V/H/S”), Swanberg and his zeitgeist-defining mumblecore movement (read: indie filmmaking with a cute name and perhaps even lower budgets than audiences were used to at the time), were actually embraced by the SXSW Film Festival and not the indie-defining organizers in Utah.

Back in January, it was reported that indie directing duo, Jay and Mark Duplass (“Jeff, Who Lives At Home”) were working on a half-hour comedy for HBO entitled “Togetherness.” The series details the trials and tribulations of two couples forced to live under the same roof; its humor deriving from the real-life problems within a relationship. News on the series cooled down after that with snippets of casting announcements being the norm. Back in March it was confirmed that Amanda Peet would be playing a lead role next to confirmed stars Melanie Lynskey, and Duplass regular Steve Zissis.

Joe Swanberg is having a moment. The prolific indie director hit SXSW this spring with his first Hollywood picture (sort of), “Drinking Buddies,” featuring a cast that includes Anna Kendrick, Olivia Wilde and Jake Johnson. But of course, Swanberg has never been a one-movie-at-a-time kind of a guy, so surprise, he’s also got romantic comedy finished as well.

It’s coming on 20 years since Melanie Lynskey appeared in her first film, but she cannot get used to seeing herself on screen. “It’s awful. Awful,” she says in her kiwi accent, characteristically wide open and soft spoken, over iced teas in Manhattan’s East Village. She has a new movie coming out, “Hello I Must Be Going,” in which she’s the lead and is in every scene -- a first for the actor. Her work in this film is widely being referred to as her breakout performance, which could be a frustrating identification for anyone who saw her in “Heavenly Creatures,” almost two decades ago. Many are hoping the label sticks this time, but after so many years in movies and television, Lynskey refuses to have expectations about where her career is headed.

While the movies have generally favored older men chasing younger women, often to comedic effect, the reverse rarely gets explored. And when it does, it's certainly not with the emotional weight and insight of Todd Louiso's "Hello, I Must Be Going."

With his father Ned Beatty in tow, you'd be inclined to think Thomas Beatty could have called in a few more favours for his directorial debut, but it looks like the writer-director is keeping things small-scale with the microbudget, dark comedy "Teddy Bears," co-helmed by his wife, photographer Rebecca Fishman.

This business moves fast. We'd barely finished hitting 'publish' on a post about "Community" star Gillian Jacobs joining the Steve Carell/Keira Knightley comedy-drama "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World," and our inbox pinged with a press release from Focus Features, who recently acquired the film. As it turns out, Jacobs wasn't the only actor to come on board the film recently.
