This fall will mark fifty years since November 22, 1963 -- a date that continues to haunt American history. When John F. Kennedy was assassinated, it seemed to mark an undeniable shift in the country, away from the positivity and hope that followed War War II, into a more fraught and frightened era with more wars overseas, social and political upheaval and much more. To mark the anniversary, there will undoubtedly be a ton of programming and films to choose from, and this is one of them.

But this idyllic backdrop holds something far more sinister in store and when only three of the four return home, so begins a mystery crossing national borders, and poised to fundamentally change the lives of everyone involved. So begins "Wish You Were Here," a lean thriller from director Kieran-Darcy Smith, from a script he co-wrote with one of the film's stars (and his wife), Felicity Price, in a picture that features two of Australia's hottest exports at the moment, Joel Edgerton and Teresa Palmer.

Oscar winner Melissa Leo (“The Fighter”) is heading back to television to co-star with Matt Dillion in M. Night Shyamalan’s “Wayward Pines.” Fox is putting together the event series based on Blake Crouch’s novel "Pines" and hopes to have it out by fall 2014. Described as a "Twin Peaks"-esque show (high hopes), the story follows Secret Service agent Ethan Burke (Dillion) as he searches for two missing federal agents in Wayward Pines, Idaho. Of course, not everything is at it seems in Wayward Pines and Burke only finds more mysteries. One of which is Nurse Pam (Leo) who tends to Burke when he winds up in the town hospital, only to become a lethal advisory with deep ties to Wayward’s secrets.

Only a few years ago, big sci-fi action spectacles were confined pretty much to the summer months. But now, the season has crept out to the extent that it essentially lasts from the middle of February (see the release of "A Good Day To Die Hard" this year) to... pretty much the rest of the year, with barely a few weeks going by without a major tent-pole arriving. Even the once-barren month of April isn't safe anymore, with the arrival of "Oblivion," an expensive, visually lavish sci-fi picture top-lined by megastar Tom Cruise.

The Tribeca Film Festival is rolling out more first-looks. First off, is director Steph Green’s latest endeavor, entitled "Run and Jump." The film marks Green’s return to Tribeca after winning in the Best Short Narrative category in 2008 for her film "New Boy." "Run and Jump" stars "Saturday Night Live" alumnus Will Forte in a rare dramatic turn (perhaps a preview of things to come in Alexander Payne's "Nebraska"), Ruth McCabe, and Edward MacLiam. It follows an Irish wife and mother who find herself having to band her family together after her husband suffers a stroke.

"The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman" opens up with an arresting image, the titular character (played by Shia LaBeouf) dangling upside down in woozy slow-motion, his face brutally beaten and bloody. As the narrator (John Hurt) explains, Charlie Countryman is languishing in the wind about to be shot by a red-headed girl, and that the young man had to die. And he did it all for love.

After 12 years immersed (lost?) in the world of motion-capture, Robert Zemeckis re-emerges into live-action filmmaking for “Flight,” an engaging and initially very promising drama about alcoholism, redemption and forgiveness that grows uneven and long winded as it progresses, clocking in just under 2 hours and 20 minutes. Featuring a thrilling and terrifying opening, plus potent and moving elements of a conventional but admirable morality drama, “Flight" is often undone by its very unsubtle choices and its problematic and strained last act.

We have to admit, given how long this movie has been kicking around in development, we've been wary of any news. Indeed, the last we heard anything about the movie was in the spring when Hugh Jackman -- who was originally attached over two years ago when Antoine Fuqua was going to direct  -- came back on board, with "Incendies" helmer Denis Villeneuve behind the camara with promises of a November 2013 release. And then nothing. But it looks like the wheels are in motion as another talent has come on board.

Well, if you can't get Robert Pattinson, Taylor Kitsch, Armie Hammer or Garrett Hedlund (all rumored/denied early on) perhaps give Sam Claflin a call? Perhaps due to thankless roles (or simply just bland presence), the actor starred in "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" and "Snow White and the Huntsman" and made little impact. But maybe a Kitsch-ian third crack at a franchise will be the breakthrough he needs.
