The Double
The pleasures to be found in Richard Ayoade's upcoming "The Double" go far beyond Jesse Eisenberg's dual performance that powers the movie. From the great score by Andrew Hewitt, to the production design from David Crank, every inch of the "Submarine" director's film has been carefully considered and thought through. That it all comes together as a near flawless steampunk comedy/romance/thriller is the icing on the cake.

It takes a certain kind of person to gather up a handful of camels, head out into the middle of the Australian outback, miles from civilization, and start walking, but that's just what Robyn Davidson did and her story is chronicled in "Tracks," the latest from director John Curran (“We Don’t Live Here Anymore,” “The Painted Veil”). And with Mia Wasikowska in the lead role, perhaps it shouldn't surprise you that this is one will be worth watching.

The Double, Jesse Eisenberg, Mia Wasikoswka
Of all the films coming out in 2014 we've already seen, it's safe to say Richard Ayoade's "The Double" is near the top of our list. Starring Jesse Eisenberg and Mia Wasikowska, the film is a dark, Kafka-esque story centered on a man who is driven insane by the appearance of his doppelgänger.

From Cannes to Toronto to New York to London, it has dipped its fangs into the neck of The Playlist team and rendered us helpless to its charms. And now a plethora of new images have arrived as an excuse for us to talk about this one again.

Only Lovers Left Alive
From Cannes to Toronto to New York to London, as Jim Jarmusch's elegant and beautiful "Only Lovers Left Alive" has cruised the festival circuit, it has won over the hearts of various Playlist members at each stop along the way. It's easily his best film since "Dead Man" (though I'm one of the few who adores "The Limits Of Control") and will undoubtedly rank among his finest accomplishments. And while it's a hard movie to cut down to trailer form, this new international spot does a pretty nice job.

Madame Bovary Mia Wasikowska
The American Film Market kicks off next week, which means there's going to be a lot of buyers hustling a lot of movies, and distributors and financiers look for product to put their cash into. And that means folks writing the cheques will want to see something first. And since many of these movies are mid-production or just getting started, pictures will have to suffice.

Guillermo del Toro's next phantasmagorical outing is getting a new moniker. His forthcoming Gothic romance "Crimson Peak," starring the scarily great Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska, Charlie Hunnam and Tom Hiddleston, has been given the more anonymously spooky title "Haunted Peak" and a tentative release date of April, 2015. Shooting begins in February at Pinewood Toronto Studios and lasts until May. In between now and then, del Toro will direct the pilot for "The Strain," an FX series based on a trilogy of lousy vampire novels the filmmaker co-wrote with "The Town" scribe Chuck Hogan.

One our our favorite films out TIFF last month, and a bold sophomore feature effort from "Submarine" director Richard Ayoade, trying to describe "The Double" is a bit difficult. But if the idea of a steampunk, "Brazil"-esque black comedy based on the novella by Fyodor Dostoevsky sounds even remotely intriguing, than this film will more than deliver.

Jim Jarmusch's "Only Lovers Left Alive" is a film that has been slowly knocking out The Playlist one-by-one. Jessica Kiang caught it at Cannes and took a shine to the playful movie, I saw it in Toronto and thought it was simply one of the best movies of the entire fest, and Editor-In-Chief Rodrigo Perez just got out of the New York Film Festival screening, and he too was blown away. "Only Jarmusch pulls off a moody, romantic, existential & melancholy look at love/time/culture with hilarious dry wit," he tweeted, adding: "Absolutely essential. Exquisite. Must-See Spring 2014." Frankly, I couldn't agree more.
