Michael Douglas, Cannes
After the bona fide legend and usually-picky Robert Redford, of all people, nabbed a role in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," it seemed all bets were off in terms of who Marvel could woo to their comic book universe. And today brings another surprise addition, with an Oscar-, Emmy- and Golden Globe-winner joining the next big Marvel flick.

With "The Hangover" boys having seemingly exploited every debauchery laden avenue Las Vegas has to offer and then some, another party-happy movie set in the city might seem like a tired notion. Particularly when it's combined with a premise as wheezy and obvious as this, getting four older men together for one last hurrah in the city where your sins remain secret. But somehow, "Last Vegas" is better than it has any right to be. Yes, it's uneven, more jokes miss than hit, and it winds up taking easy dramatic shortcuts from the more interesting avenues that the script presents, but it's thanks to the lead quartet that the comedy is as engaging at it is.

What happens when a bunch of old people discover Red Bull, hip hop and lithe young women? Well, we'll find out in the upcoming comedy "Last Vegas", which pits Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas, Kevin Kline and Morgan Freeman against Sin City. Frankly, we rather suppose we all lose in this one.

Perhaps speaking to the dearth of roles for older actors, or the need for a paycheck, this morning Michael Douglas was honored for his turn in "Behind The Candelabra" with an Emmy nomination. And now this afternoon comes the trailer for "Last Vegas," another movie set in the Nevada playground that finds him hamming it up alongside Morgan Freeman, Robert De Niro and Kevin Kline in a premise that is basically "The Hangover-but-with-old-people."

Following the path of “Something’s Gotta Give” and “The Bucket List," “And So It Goes” is the latest effort from Rob Reiner, and he has a similarly stellar starry cast and crew to match those aforementioned hits.

Put the Emmys and Golden Globes on alert, because Michael Douglas is coming. Earlier this week, Steven Soderbergh's "Behind The Candelabra" screened at the Cannes Film Festival and the conversation soon moved on from discussion of it being the director's final feature (for now) to Douglas' standout performance. It's the best thing he's done in probably a decade, if not longer, a completely transformative turn that's really unlike anything he's tackled before, and in a movie that we described in our review as "decadently entertaining." Well now you can get a little taste.

Soderbergh, Douglas, Cannes, 2013
It was hard to envisage as positive a Cannes response to a U.S. competition film as that which greeted the Coen Brothers’ “Inside Llewyn Davis” the other day, but if such a thing is possible, it may well have happened today, for Steven Soderbergh’s wonderful Liberace biopic “Behind the Candelabra” (our review here). Immediately after the press screening stars Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, writer Richard LaGravanese, Producer Jerry Weintraub and director Steven Soderbergh spoke to press, turning up some choice anecdotes and opinions in the process. Here are our 10 favorite moments.

Behind The Candelabra
It's almost unfair how easy Steven Soderbergh makes it look. As the filmmaker heads into his hiatus from movie-making, he's spent the few last years dipping between high grade entertainment ("Magic Mike") and accomplished genre films ("Side Effects," "Haywire") and for his goodbye, he's more or less combined the two. "Behind The Candelabra" is a cinematic bauble, that coats typical biopic fare with some real panache and heart. And while this does indeed mark Soderbergh's last hurrah for now, it's likely that a different narrative will soon form around the film. That narrative will surround Michael Douglas, with the 68 year-old actor delivering his best performance in a least a decade if not longer.

Trailer placement is a very important thing. You get your promo in front of a film that has the same target audience, and turns out to be a big hit, and you're potentially laughing all the way to the bank. And that's why we've just seen a trailer for "Last Vegas" over at Yahoo -- "The Hangover Part III" is only a week away, and it's the perfect film to help sell CBS Films' aged bachelor party movie to a giant crowd.

If any of the major studios had the brass balls to take on "Behind The Candelabra," we think Michael Douglas probably would've been a no brainer as an Oscar contender, particularly judging by this new trailer unveiled over at The Guardian. It's a totally transformative performance and it looks like a total blast. While Douglas stuck with the project -- put on hold as he battled cancer and revived once he recovered -- and was open to all challenges the script brought with it, he did have his limits.
