Is it any surprise that one of the biggest franchises on the planet is engaging some of the biggest stars in Hollywood? Ever since the Disney/Lucasfilm deal went down and J.J. Abrams started work on "Star Wars: Episode 7," there have been no shortage of names rumored for the project. Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael B. Jordan, Jack O’Connell, Alex Pettyfer, Saoirse Ronan, Sullivan Stapleton and, most recently, Jesse Plemons have all been said to be eyed or have read or been considered. But before all of them, Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher were reported to be returning to reprise their turns as Luke, Han and Leia. And it seems they will be a crucial part of the new trilogy.

The Best Quotes of 2013
2013, we’re not quite done with you yet. To close off our coverage of the year gone by, we wanted to hand over the mic to the actors, directors and other film professionals who made waves, headlines, faux pas, announcements, pronouncements or funny gags throughout the year. And we’re changing up the format this time out, scouring the whole internet and not just our own archives for these little nuggets, mainly because we’re fairly sure you’ve all avidly consumed, and committed to memory every word of each of the 200-odd interviews we ran in 2013, and we’d be preaching to the choir.

X-Men: Days Of Future Past Bent Bullet
Last Friday was the 50th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination (check out our feature on 8 movies tackling the subject), an event that even today is a lightning rod for conspiracy hounds everywhere. Who wanted Kennedy killed? How many gunmen were there? Is the single-bullet -- aka the “Magic Bullet” -- theory really the best we could come up with? Leave it to Fox’s marketing department to weave this web of intrigue and paranoia into the world of “X-Men: Days Of Future Past.”

Michael Fassbender
There's little sense in trying to stop the Michael Fassbender train—you roll with it or get the hell out of the way. Closing off 2013 with two movies in theaters, "The Counselor" and "12 Years A Slave," Fassy isn't spending a moment putting his feet up. He's already in production on the western "Slow West," he'll kick off the new year by shooting "Macbeth" and then there is little superhero movie you might have heard about called "X-Men: Days Of Future Past" opening next spring. And now? Dude is going gangster.

X-Men: Days Of Future Past
After no shortage of rumors, lots of set photos, a stinger at the end of this summer's "The Wolverine," and the return of Bryan Singer to the director's chair, bringing two schools of "X-Men" together for one massive outing, it's time to see if this all works. The the first trailer for "X-Men: Days Of Future Past" has arrived.

5 Most WTF Moments From 'The Counselor'
Acidic, cynical, perhaps having a twisted laugh on those who think they’re in control of their own fate, Ridley Scott’s “The Counselor” is an incredibly moribund and bleak poem about greed, chance, and the dark side of man. It’s like a merciless and blistering riff on the adage, “If you want to make God laugh, tell him about your plans.” And coming from the mind of celebrated author Cormac McCarthy (“The Road,” “Blood Meridian”), known for grim and unforgiving stories of fate, morality and the dark shadows of human nature, what did you expect? It’s classic McCarthy chiseled down to the bloody bone (and note this isn’t his first script: McCarthy wrote a screenplay for 1977’s “The Gardener's Son”—watch it in full here).

Brad Pitt, The Counselor
Yep, it was in 3,336 theaters, stars Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz (among myriad other names), was directed by Ridley Scott and written by celebrated American author Cormac McCarthy, but 20th Century Fox's "The Counselor" flopped despite all that star power. We can't say we're totally surprised. Sure, it had the now infamous catfish scene, cheetahs, a terribly awful (or terribly good) Cameron Diaz as an evil black widow with cheetah tattoos, drug deals, beheadings, and more sordidness, but Scott's film—a blisteringly dark, acidic poem about fate, greed and the way we communicate—was just too arty and talky for mainstream audiences (and perhaps too mainstream for the arthouse).

X-Men: Days Of Future Past, Wolverine
Next summer's big budget superhero romp "X-Men: Days of Future Past" certain sounds, er, ambitious. Combining time travel, alternate realities, and two different casts of X-Men (those from Bryan Singer's original movies and the "swinging sixties" variants featured in "X-Men: First Class"), it sounds like it could be a mess of fun… or just plain messy. We'll get the first taste from the movie in the form of a teaser trailer released next week, but until then, Empire has unleashed a whole slew of new photos from the film, featuring mutants both old and new. Excelsior!

The Counselor
Michael Fassbender is sexy like a shark, and sleek as a sports car. His chin is chiseled and hard, forever confident, but his smile is subterranean, hiding secrets we could never guess. As compelling an actor he is, perhaps there’s almost too much depth to this classically pretty face, one that cannot help but come across as predatory, salacious. He’s an unlikely choice to be a wronged man in the middle of a suspense thriller, and yet here he is, apparently meant to be likable and relatable at the center of Ridley Scott and Cormac McCarthy’s reptilian “The Counselor.”

5 Michael Fassbender Films You May Not Have Seen
Michael Fassbender has had a good run of it these past few years. It's a hot streak (one which saw him the recipient of the "staggering honor" that was Playlist Man of the Year 2011) that looks set to continue with the Irish/German actor moving between critically adored arthouse films and broad-appeal tentpoles with ease, often for directors who he's impressed before. Obviously, right now he can be seen reuniting with "Hunger" and "Shame" director Steve McQueen on the Oscar-tipped "12 Years A Slave," while this week also seems him back with "Prometheus" helmer Ridley Scott in the Cormac McCarthy-penned "The Counselor." Next year will again see him do the indie/tentpole one-two: in Lenny Abrahamson's "Frank" (the director previously cast Fassbender in a Mastercard commercial before either had made the real leap to features), before he returns as Magneto in "X-Men: Days of Future Past."
