Christopher Nolan, the ball is in your court. In what's already been an atypically strong year for big commercial movies ("21 Jump Street," "The Cabin In The Woods," "The Hunger Games"), Ridley Scott's long-awaited return to sci-fi, "Prometheus," just made a very strong case for being, of everything, the big studio movie that we're counting the days for, with the full trailer debuting tonight, just after Scott unveiled it at WonderCon. And it blew our motherfucking socks off.

Given that it's the first science-fiction movie in thirty years from Ridley Scott, the man whose previous entries in the genre, "Alien" and "Blade Runner," stand at the very apex. And as a spiritual successor set in the same universe as the former, the stakes for geeks are even higher.

Accusations of ageism fly around Hollywood all the time, but they seemed to be fairly definitively refuted in recent weeks when a 78-year-old became the hottest screenwriter in town after his film sold, attracted Ridley Scott and Michael Fassbender, and was fast-tracked into production this May. Of course, it helps if that 78-year-old is Cormac McCarthy, the Pulitzer prize-winning author of "Blood Meridian," "All The Pretty Horses," "The Road" and the source material for Best Picture winner "No Country For Old Men." But it's still a rare achievement, to get a film from the page to a greenlight, with A-list talent attached, in only a matter of days.

2011 was a pretty damn good year for Michael Fassbender. He showed he could be a commanding presence amongst the spectacle of a blockbuster in "X-Men: First Class," and then wowed arthouse crowds with this powerful performance as a man crippled by sex addiction in Oscar-snubbed "Shame" (a shame, indeed). So right now, he's in a pretty good spot and likely has his pick of projects. Of course, he plans to reteam with Steve McQueen for "Twelve Years A Slave" this summer and is circling the lead in Ridley Scott's Cormac McCarthy-penned "The Counselor" (should that actually come together and be a real thing). And now you can call him, without hyperbole, an Irish myth.

Maybe those expecting Ridley Scott to make back to back sci-fi films (possibly a "Blade Runner" prequel/sequel), should hold their horses a little bit (pun intended). Sure, project's are always up in the air, but celebrated American author Cormac McCarthy's spec script "The Counselor" looks like it's on the fast track to nextsville. The "Alien" director, and its upcoming sorta prequel, "Prometheus," who was circling the picture last week has apparently officially committed -- in writing and what not -- to direct the "No Country For Old Men"-esque story (but "on steroids") about a cocky lawyer who naively gets involved in the drug trade, thinking he can tame it, and finds himself caught up in a desperate situation.
