2011 was a pretty damn good year for Michael Fassbender. He showed he could be a commanding presence amongst the spectacle of a blockbuster in "X-Men: First Class," and then wowed arthouse crowds with this powerful performance as a man crippled by sex addiction in Oscar-snubbed "Shame" (a shame, indeed). So right now, he's in a pretty good spot and likely has his pick of projects. Of course, he plans to reteam with Steve McQueen for "Twelve Years A Slave" this summer and is circling the lead in Ridley Scott's Cormac McCarthy-penned "The Counselor" (should that actually come together and be a real thing). And now you can call him, without hyperbole, an Irish myth.

Michael Fassbender May Star In Cormac McCarthy's 'The Counselor'; Ridley Scott Officially Signs On To Direct In May

Maybe those expecting Ridley Scott to make back to back sci-fi films (possibly a "Blade Runner" prequel/sequel), should hold their horses a little bit (pun intended). Sure, project's are always up in the air, but celebrated American author Cormac McCarthy's spec script "The Counselor" looks like it's on the fast track to nextsville. The "Alien" director, and its upcoming sorta prequel, "Prometheus," who was circling the picture last week has apparently officially committed -- in writing and what not -- to direct the "No Country For Old Men"-esque story (but "on steroids") about a cocky lawyer who naively gets involved in the drug trade, thinking he can tame it, and finds himself caught up in a desperate situation.

Barring die hard fans of Kenneth Branagh TV show "Wallander," a year ago, not many could have picked Tom Hiddleston out of a line-up. But having been selected by Branagh to play Loki in "Thor," the young British actor's gone from strength to strength; playing opposite Rachel Weisz in Terence Davies' "The Deep Blue Sea," cropping up among the ensemble cast of Steven Spielberg's "War Horse" and, in a few short months, reprising Loki as the villian in the hotly anticipated superhero team-up flick "The Avengers."

Christopher Plummer Says He'll Never Work With Terrence Malick Again, Says He Needs A Writer

While Terrence Malick's admirers and fans are numerous, his mercurial attitude, intuitive filmmaking style and free rein in the editing suite has also earned him his fair share detractors. Adrien Brody wasn't exactly pleased to learn his lead role had pretty much be reduced to nothing in "The Thin Red Line"; composer James Horner famously battled Malick during the making of "The New World" and recently, Sean Penn was a bit confused on what his role really meant in "The Tree Of Life" (though he still recommended and supported the film). Well, you can add one more actor to the list who doesn't exactly sing the praises of Terrence Malick.

After a hectic 2011, one that saw the actor appear in no fewer than four high-profile films (winning him our Man of the Year accolade), Michael Fassbender is calming things down a bit for 2012. Sure, he'll likely be highly visible in the coming months, thanks to a possible Oscar nomination for his work in "Shame" coming next week, but the actor actually hasn't shot a film since last July, and will only have two films hitting theaters in 2012.

A couple of days ago, as part of our year-end coverage, we named Jessica Chastain as our Woman of the Year, and it was an easy decision to make; no one's been as omnipresent, or given as many different, and excellent, turns, as Chastain did. But our man of the year was slightly more difficult. Should it be Matt Damon, who cropped up in five major releases, including Steven Soderbergh's "Contagion?" Hmm... no. Damon's "Happy Feet Two" shrimp partner Brad Pitt, who fought to get both "The Tree of Life" and "Moneyball" made, to tremendous results? No. Ryan Gosling, who embraced stardom at long last with a trio of performances in "Crazy Stupid Love," "Drive" and "The Ides of March?" George Clooney, who directed the latter and starred in Alexander Payne's "The Descendants?" No.

To say Michael Fassbender has had a big and busy 2011 is like saying Herman Cain had an unsuccessful campaign run. It’s a massive understatement. In 20 months he shot six films – “Jane Eyre,” “X-Men: First Class,” “A Dangerous Method,” “Shame,” “Prometheus” and Steven Soderbergh’s upcoming action thriller “Haywire," the film for which he’s currently doing press rounds.

It's been a massive week for trailers and promos with "The Dark Knight Rises," "Wrath of the Titans" and "The Hobbit" all premiering their first looks to go with the big releases. But there's one big one still to come, as tomorrow will bring the online debut of the first teaser for "Prometheus," Ridley Scott's return to the sci-fi genre after nearly 30 years away, and a precursor/successor to his "Alien," although the extent to which hasn't yet been fully revealed.
