Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams, Michael Keaton
Developing for well over a year now, not much has been heard about Tom McCarthy's Catholic church sex scandal drama since last summer, when Matt Damon was named as a frontrunner to star in the project. That didn't happen, but the "Win Win" and "The Visitor" director has still managed to attract a pretty terrific cast, with his movie now gaining some very definite forward traction.

Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu's "Birdman," has quickly skyrocketed to the top of the year's most anticipated films along with "Inherent Vice," and "Gone Girl" (a trifecta that will hopefully make this year's New York Film Festival one of its best years ever). Why? Well outside a stellar cast which we'll get to, it's a pitch black comedy about a washed up actor famous for a superhero role who tries to mount a comeback on Broadway. Trailers so far suggest a delusional dark psychology that the hero has to battle and possibly even a sly meta commentary in the nature of super hero hegemony on screen.

Birdman
The big three European festivals are Berlin, Cannes and Venice, and the openers for the first two of those lurched from the sublime to the ridiculous this year: Berlin nabbed Wes Anderson's "Grand Budapest Hotel" to kick off their fest, while Cannes was stuck with the clanging disaster of "Grace Of Monaco." Venice have kept their pick under wraps, until now, but fortunately, it should be closer to the Berlin pick in quality...

Birdman
Earlier this month, the first trailer for Alejandro González Iñárritu's "Birdman" dropped and it was kind of bonkers awesome. But what on Earth is it about? “It’s less about a guy who played a superhero in big hit movies than it is about exploring the human soul and psyche, and also where we are as a society today and how much importance we place on those kinds of things,” the film's star Michael Keaton told EW. So certainly, not your average comedy or drama by stretch, but the firepower behind the movie is undeniable.

Birdman,
Well, our week just got a whole lot better, because the trailer (and poster) for one of our most anticipated films of the year has arrived. We've been enormously curious about "Birdman," partly because it's the latest film from one of our favorites, Alejandro Alejandro González Iñárritu (or Alejandro G. Iñárritu, as the trailer now bills him), and partly because the film promised to be something of a departure, apparently a more comic vibe for a filmmaker whose work before now, like "Amores Perros," "21 Grams," "Babel" and "Biutiful," has tended towards the bleak.

Review: ‘Need For Speed’ Starring Aaron Paul, Imogen Poots & Dominic Cooper

Engineered for maximum velocity, super-torqued hairpin turns and high-octane thrills (obviously), thanks to the likes of the “Fast & Furious,” you should know exactly what to expect from the upcoming junior series, “Need For Speed” aka “Hot Wheels: The Movie.” But if the ‘F&F’ series is often absurdly entertaining with riotous cinematic maximalism in the pole position, “Need For Speed” is comparatively humorless, arguably dumber and doesn’t boast the same visual horsepower.

Need For Speed
As of 2009, 140 million copies of the "Need For Speed" video game had been sold, and who knows how many countless more million units have been shifted since, but will that audience show up to see the big-screen version of their favorite pedal pushing console time waster? That's the riddle Hollywood eternally tries to solve with each video game adaptation though they're hoping they got it right here.

Robocop
Every movie should be approached with an open mind. Ideally, be it a film from Martin Scorsese or Friedberg and Seltzer, a reviewer should be going in without expectations, ready to play it as it lays. But it'd be dishonest to pretend that that was the case going in to "RoboCop," because it's a long-delayed remake of Paul Verhoeven's 1980s cult action sci-fi classic that, based at least on early buzz and previews, does without much of what made the original special — the satirical bite, the extreme violence, the hand-crafted effects et al. As such, even the most even-handed person could be forgiven for going in with a heavy heart, especially with the smell of the abysmal "Total Recall" redo still lingering like a fish head behind a radiator.

Yes, we know Aaron Paul has a name but let's face it, we still can't forget "Breaking Bad" and neither can most folks considering how much the "alternate ending" to the series was passed around over the weekend. So, for our purposes at the moment, "Need For Speed" stars Jesse Pinkman and once again he's going to be yelling at stuff, have a pretty girl at this side all while trying to outfox a wily criminal.

Robocop, 2014
While we didn't necessarily want this remake, it has been made, and we have to admit, we're intrigued by "RoboCop." The talent for this is certainly undeniable with "Elite Squad" helmer Jose Padilha guiding a helluva cast—Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earle Haley, Michael K. Williams, Jennifer Ehle, Jay Baruchel and Samuel L. Jackson—through futuristic Detroit. But can it even begin to come close to Paul Verhoeven's twisted perfection? Well, this new trailer is going to make a case for it.
