While we anxiously await the oddball awesomeness David O. Russell is cooking up with "American Hustle," let's take a victory lap with "Silver Linings Playbook." The screwball rom-com nabbed 8 Oscar nominations resulting in a Best Actress win for Jennifer Lawrence, who shined among a uniformly excellent ensemble in the tale of one man's journey to find a happy medium between his mental illness and the troubles in his life. It's charming, winning stuff, and one extra moment that didn't make it to theaters is now available for you to enjoy at home.

American Hustle Bradley Cooper Christian Bale
Okay, while we might prefer the original working title "American Bullshit," it probably would've created a marketing nightmare, so the official replacement? Yeah, it's not too shabby at all.

Who does David O. Russell think he is? Woody Allen? Okay, we kid, but the number of name-brand stars he's lining up for his still (aggravatingly) untitled Abscam drama is reaching epic proportions. Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Renner, Amy Adams, Louis C.K., Jennifer Lawrence, Alessandro Nivola, Elisabeth Rohm, Dawn Olivieri and Jack Huston are already on board the currently shooting movie, which is now adding even more cast members.

TIFF Review: Chest-Beating LAPD Cop Drama 'End Of Watch' Is Clichéd & Monotonous

Like "Harsh Times" before it, police drama "End of Watch" conflates realism with sensationalism. In fact, writer/director David Ayer sustains an abrasive tone throughout "End of Watch" in a number of ways. Firstly, Ayer gives his buddy cop drama a cheap kind of immediacy by having his macho, Alpha male Los Angeles cop protagonists film their lives as police officers. Button-sized cameras and hand-held digital cameras aren’t however just used by the police: both the local Mexican drug cartel members and the black gang-bangers that the 13th district cops have to keep an eye out for use cameras to document and valorize their activities too.

You have to hand it to David Ayer, he has found his niche and he’s working it hard. From “Training Day” to films like “The Fast And The Furious,” “Harsh Times” and “Street Kings” he’s worked steadily in the urban crime genre, mostly following cops with less than ethical methods. A new red band trailer has dropped, showing his latest entry into the genre, the Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña-starring “End of Watch.”

Hey, did you know that Cody Horn, Channing Tatum's ball-busting love interest in "Magic Mike," was in David Ayer's upcoming cop drama "End Of Watch"? We didn't either, but among the batch of new pics from the film hitting the web in advance of the film's TIFF premiere and fall release, is an image that shows her in a different light than we saw in the stripper flick.

David Ayer likes to make cop movies, and we suppose if that's what keeps the bread buttered and a roof over your head, why mess with a good thing? But while "End of Watch" employs a voyeuristic/found-footage aesthetic not commonly found in the genre, the story itself feels like one we've seen and heard many times before. But with a TIFF premiere on the cards, perhaps there's a little bit more weight to it than simply being another study of the boys in blue.

Did you know that David Ayer's "End Of Watch" was presented at Comic-Con this weekend? No? Well, it was, but unfortunately the gamble by newbie distributors Open Road Films didn't quite pay off. Of the many, many movies lighting up social media this weekend and getting major buzz, this cop drama wasn't one of them.

A found footage cop movie? OK, not quite, but David Ayer's "End of Watch," starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena as two cops in the LAPD, definitely has that visceral, super intimate, shot on digital-cameras look to it. Or as Ayer once described it: an "in your face” POV style, and that's definitely the case.
