99 Homes
It opens with blood spatter; it will end with your blood boiling. Which is to say that Ramin Bahrani’s ferocious foreclosure drama, “99 Homes” is exactly as effective as it needs to be. While neither subtle nor particularly nuanced, the blunt force trauma impact of its narrative never feels exploitative, being wholly justified by the importance of its themes. Importance -- it’s such a loaded, off-putting word, but it is the right one, because while Bahrani’s filmmaking skill and the excellent performances convincingly sell the experience of the film almost as a genre thriller or a Scorsese-esque, descent-into-madness gangster picture, those of us not directly affected by the housing collapse will nonetheless emerge with a better understanding of its terrible human toll, one all too easy to push aside when it is reduced to statistics and demographics.

99 Homes
Andrew Garfield has been locked up in “Spider-Man” world for quite some time now, but he’s used his down time judiciously. He acted alongside the late Philip Seymour Hoffman in “Death of a Salesman” on Broadway, something he’ll likely never forget, but since he was cast as the cheeky webslinger, Garfield’s only acted in one film. And he’s chosen well with “99 Homes,” the fifth feature-length effort by indie director Ramin Bahrani.

Young Ones
A film that had our own Rodrigo Perez, "thinking about, chewing on and lingering [on]" after seeing it at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, "Young Ones" seems like the kind of smart, original movie that genre fans should flip for. And a new trailer is here to take you into the dusty, treacherous world conjured by director Jake Paltrow.

The Harvest
Discounting some scattered television work, director John McNaughton has been off the grid for 13 years as far as features go. Even then, you’d have to go back all the way to 1998 and “Wild Things” to find the last movie he’s made with any kind of traction, with a certain swimming pool scene featuring Denise Richards and Neve Campbell doing the rounds on an assortment of seedy list articles. And you’d have to rewind the tape even further to 1986’s “Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer,” to find the McNaughton film most likely to remain the ace in the cult director’s deck so far. In “The Harvest” McNaughton returns to add to the rich cinematic tradition depicting depraved parenting, and gets the best possible welcome back party at Montreal’s genre film festival Fantasia.

The Young Ones
It’s a dystopian near-future. Water has run dry, America’s in a debilitating drought. That’s what sets the stage for Jake Paltrow’s new picture “Young Ones.” But it’s actually from many accounts, including our own review, more of a morality drama with a patriarchal struggle for power. The movie stars Michael Shannon as a father trying to protect his land in family. His children are played by Elle Fanning and Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Nicholas Hoult plays a young man with his eye on more than just the previous land the father owns.

The Missing Person Michael Shannon
Such has been the life of James Franco, that he can still be in school, and when he gets the lark to make a short, he can just get on the phone and called up Michael Shannon to star in it. And that's the case with "Herbert White," a 14-minute 2010 movie Franco made while at NYU, which is probably one you'd probably otherwise pass over, were it not for the uh, promise, of Shannon having a sex with a corpse. Because he does.

The Young Ones
It’s been a while since we've heard anything about the dystopian Sundance film “Young Ones.” Screen Media bought the film in May, but the months between its Utah debut and sale were rather quiet. That’s changing, with the release of two new trailers. Presumably a release date is not far behind.

Adèle Exarchopoulos
Despite roles in blockbusters like “Prometheus,” “Thor” and “Pacific Rim,” Idris Elba still hasn’t had that one role that would catapult him into a household name—sorry, “The Wire” doesn’t count—but he’ll be getting his shot at the spotlight with the previously-announced action vehicle “Bastille Day.”

Young Ones, Jake Paltrow
Part western, part science fiction, wholly original—it’s not easy to pin down — writer/director Jake Paltrow’s latest film, “Young Ones,” which premiered this week at the Sundance Film Festival (read our review here), is worth an examination.
