It’s exceptionally strange to be reviewing a film so soon after the passing of Roger Ebert. Surely he’s the reason why most of us write reviews, why we’ve ever felt the need to tap our keyboards once the end credits begin to roll. We love and admire the deep thinkers who favor academic readings of film, but we really want to be Ebert, brimming with humor and personality, able to succinctly describe the most complex concepts for audiences of all persuasions. I wonder exactly what Ebert would have made of “Tomorrow You’re Gone,” a low-budget, low-temperature noir with direct-to-DVD production value, but nonetheless hitting movie screens this Friday.

Bet you forgot all about this one, but guess what, so did we. First announced way back in 2011, seemingly shot, completed and then left to collect dust, the thriller "Penthouse North" starring Michael Keaton and Michelle Monaghan now has an international trailer. And thank goodness they are both on to much, much better things.

You had us at Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. But toss "Sin Nombre" and "Jane Eyre" helmer Cary Fukunaga in the mix, and a crime series for them to play with? Just tell us when, and we'll be there. Brewing for the past year and picked up by HBO almost a year ago, it looks like "True Detective" is heading toward cameras.

Deadline is exclusively reporting news out of Toronto that the once-and-future Captain America Chris Evans and supremely underutilized Michelle Monaghan will co-star in "A Many Splintered Thing," for McG's Wonderland Sound & Vision and Voltage Pictures. Described in the report as "in the vein of 'Amelie' and '(500) Days of Summer'" (Manic Pixie Dream Girls, activate!), a self-described "anti-romantic comedy." The film will mark Evans' first outing as an executive producer.

Since her breakout role in 2005’s “Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang,” Michelle Monaghan has been steadily turning in solid supporting performances in everything from big-budget thrillers (“Mission Impossible III”) to more character-based dramas (“North Country”), but Hollywood still hasn’t seen her as a leading lady. That’s all set to change though, as Monaghan has signed on to appear in her biggest role yet alongside Susan Sarandon.

Yesterday we said that Rachel McAdams doesn't always get the kinds of projects that match her skills, and the same could apply to Michelle Monaghan. The actress, who was excellent in "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" and "Gone Baby Gone," hasn't really stood out in much since, fading to the background or being wasted in fare like "Made Of Honor," "Eagle Eye" and "The Heartbreak Kid." But she does seem like to genre-y action pieces (such as "Source Code") as she's lined up another one.

So, did you think the brief love affair with Marilyn Monroe was going to end once the awards season was over, and "My Week With Marilyn" faded from view? Guess again. The famed actress is one of the few Hollywood icons who continues to fascinate, influence and be commemorated and a star studded documentary is on the way that will once again peel back the layers and try and get to the heart of the mystery behind Marilyn Monroe.

Michelle Monaghan is one of those actresses with a lot of potential, who spends most of her time collecting paychecks ("The Heartbreak Kid," "Made of Honor," "Eagle Eye"). She got strong notices a few years back for her performance in “Trucker,” but it’s been far too long since the days of “Gone Baby Gone,” “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,” and “North Country.” Though that is about to change.

TIFF '11 Review: 'Machine Gun Preacher' Is Essentially A Botched 'Rambo'

In 2008’s blitzkrieg actioner “Rambo,” writer-director Sylvester Stallone recognized the real-life struggles of the people of Myanmar, dramatizing the struggle in a blood-drenched exploitation film that, despite its inelegance, emboldened the people of that region while lionizing a fictional hero of guerilla warfare. The problem with “Machine Gun Preacher,” Marc Forster’s third world drama about a real-life would-be savior who ventured into the Sudan and attempted to build an orphanage with sheer will and a smidgen of gunpower, is that it’s afraid to be “Rambo.”
