Adapting a beloved TV series to the big screen is always a risky prospect, particularly when you start departing from the source material. Be it giving a post-modern meta spin on classics like "Bewitched" or "Starsky & Hutch," or chucking big-budget effects at lo-fi favorites like 'The A-Team" or "Lost In Space," the results are rarely positive, pleasing neither fans or neophytes. We thought we might be on safer ground when we discovered that Sam Raimi was directing a film called "Oz." Surely the brutal prison drama that preempted the golden age of HBO and shows like "The Sopranos" and "The Wire" would make it to the big-screen unscathed, especially in the hands of the director of "The Evil Dead" and "A Simple Plan."

Last summer, cinephiles got a bit of a surprise when Ingmar Bergman's muse Liv Ullmann revealed that she was preparing to shoot her next directorial project, "Miss Julie," this year in Ireland, and that Michelle Williams was reportedly attached. The movie is an adaptation of August Strindberg's classic Swedish play, a controversial work exploring power, sexuality, class, identity, love and gender set in 1874, and Ullmann said she'd "use Irish actors as servants and British as the masters of the house." But could she be gaining another excellent actress to her class?

Oscar voting got underway this week with a January 3rd deadline that, between Christmas and New Year, will be on us before we know it. And so, with only a few weeks left to catch up in theaters and work through screeners, we wanted to pick out a few names who've been otherwise overlooked by prognosticators and experts in the conversation to date.

So, this is why we love Michelle Williams. While the three-time Oscar nominated actress could easily sit back and ride the studio driven tentpole gravy train (and yes, she's starring in next year's "Oz The Great And Powerful," but girl's gotta eat), more than often than not, she chooses interesting stories and filmmakers, with characters that are often compelling and complex. And this is true for what may be on one of her upcoming efforts.

You may have forgotten, but Sam Raimi's "Oz The Great And Powerful" has been a long time coming. It actually started production way back in July 2011, meaning it will be just under two years before it hits theaters next spring. But it looks like that time and attention to detail have certainly paid off because if anything, the 3D- and effects-heavy movie looks pretty damn great. The murky, digitally undercooked world of Tim Burton's "Alice In Wonderland" looks nearly amateur by comparison.

This certainly isn't your grandma's Oz. With James Franco, 3D and a bunch of monkeys, the yellow brick road has been redone, for better or worse, in Sam Raimi's upcoming "Oz The Great And Powerful." Whether or not it all comes together remains to be seen, but if anything, it should look spectacular.

It's taken a while, especially given that the film comes out about four months from now, but some proper looks at James Franco, Michelle Williams, Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz in Sam Raimi's "Oz The Great And Powerful" are here. And yes, another look at a monkey.

Few actresses can make a single look speak volumes as much as Michelle Williams can, and those powers have been harnessed for the new video from indie act Wild Nothing and their video for "Paradise."

One may think, given her lack of presence, that Michelle Williams is taking a minor break from acting, or at least laying low. The actress does have an upcoming supporting role in "Oz: The Great and Powerful" which arrives in March 2013, but that will mean it's been over a year since we've seen her on screen (her last role was November 2011's "My Week with Marilyn" -- though technically, as a commenter points out, "Take This Waltz" debuted theatrically afterwards, but debuted a few months earlier at the Toronto International Film Festival).

In case we haven't made it pretty clear already, "Take This Waltz" is one of the best films of 2012 thus far. We've been blowing the trumpet pretty hard for the film, and that's because it's the kind of low-key, smart picture that needs to be championed, so excuse us if we're just going to make a bit more noise.
