Third Person
We're coming on a decade since Paul Haggis' "Crash" won Best Picture at the Oscars, and it's still one of the most divisive victories in recent memory. Detractors of the film are quick to point out the flaws in the L.A.-set drama, citing what they perceive to be the film's crass manipulativeness, one-dimensional characters, clumsy hand with racial politics and eye-rolling core of sentimentality. But frankly, you haven't seen anything yet. Haggis' return to the ensemble drama in "Third Person" makes "Crash" look like a work of understated, subtle art. A disastrously and ludicrously awful effort from the writer/director, absolutely nothing works in this facile, cliche-filled and astoundingly dull film that trades in cheap drama and soap opera theatrics.

Jupiter Ascending
Even with “Cloud Atlas” and its nearly three hour runtime, it seems the Wachowskis still had some sci-fi theatrics and leftover prosthetics ready to go for another round. Mainstream appeal be damned, they’ve boldly prepared “Jupiter Ascending," a futuristic fairy tale of sorts starring Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis, and after two trailers that both boggled and intrigued, we’ve got the first actual clip from the film.

Third Person
Paul Haggis sure likes his multi-threaded dramas, in which lives intersect and secrets are revealed and we all learn valuable lessons about who we are. Hell, "Crash" won the guy an Oscar, so why not try and do it again, only this time take that concept around the globe? That's just what he did with "Third Person," which debuted at TIFF last fall, and is still without a domestic release date.

The Angriest Man In Brooklyn
There's ticking clock movies and then there's Robin Williams being given 90 minutes to live and running around Brooklyn like a maniac. Hilarious? Well, sit back because your afternoon just got a little bit brighter.

Jupiter Ascending
The Wachowskis are back and once again, the fate of the universe is at stake, there's lot of prosthetics and ambitious costumes, and a big sci-fi spectacle being readied to hit the big screen. But here's the thing, post-"The Matrix" the sibling pair haven't exactly been box office titans. "Speed Racer" and "Cloud Atlas" were both high stakes stumbles, and one wonders how much of a shot they'll be given if "Jupiter Ascending" also manages to disappoint.

Blood Ties, Marion Cotillard
There’s no questioning the aesthetics of Guillaume Canet’s handsome-looking “Blood Ties.” Set in 1970’s New York City, the film revels in low-key details: the immaculate wardrobe, the music, the feel.

Certainly, replicating the look of '70s New York City is easy enough — just make everything bigger. The hair, the jeans, the attitude...if you wear it all with confidence and a bit of flamboyance, you can pull it off. And while "Blood Ties" has the look of a Sidney Lumet or William Friedkin movie of the period, it doesn't quite capture the essence of those films. But there are plenty of reasons why should check out it.

While Hollywood's current formula is focused on the lucrative model of making sequels and reboots, the always difficult to decipher question is figuring who to lead these valuable properties. And while the industry continues to present more complex, interesting leading opportunities to men (particularly when it comes to blockbusters), it might be time to change their thinking.

Jupiter Ascending
No matter where you stand on last year's "Cloud Atlas," it's undeniable that it had the stamp of Lana and Andy Wachowski. An amalgam of fantasy, sci-fi and Big Ideas, those have largely been the hallmarks of the directors and they are continuing in that tradition with "Jupiter Ascending," which is dropping the curtain on its veil of secrecy with the first trailer today.
