Well, it was hinted at a few weeks back, but it’s official now: Paul W.S. Anderson will be directing “Resident Evil 6.” In fact, when it comes to the next "Resident Evil" movie, everything appears to be business as usual. Anderson will be back, his wife Milla Jovovich will be back, it will be released in the month of September (September 12th, 2014, to be exact), just like every other "Resident Evil" movie except the first one

About once every eighteen months we’re cursed with another entry in the bafflingly endless, endlessly baffling “Resident Evil” franchise. Based on a series of popular horror survival games by Japanese company Capcom, the first film was originally supposed to be directed by zombie movie titan George Romero, who had directed a series of atmospheric commercials for the games in Japan. Instead, he was swapped out for Paul W.S. Anderson, who can charitably be described as a talentless hack, and had previously directed an adaptation of videogame “Mortal Kombat.” As such, gritty horror was replaced by a kind of cheaply lacquered Hollywood sheen.

Yeah, we know, these two movies go together like oil and water. One is an auteur-driven entry in a beloved franchise that has spanned generations, while the other is another indistinguishable addition to a series of films that has managed to beat out most people's expectations for its longevity. But they are both being released by Sony, so there's that.

The success of the “Resident Evil” franchise should come as a surprise to no one. When Paul W.S. Anderson’s first film arrived in 2002 it already had its winning formula in place, which essentially boils down to Milla Jovovich in a tight outfit brandishing weapons against a horde of mindless zombie/thingies/cannon fodder in slow motion. Over the series more CGI was used, with the quality somehow never increasing, and 3D was added. This September sees the release of the fifth film, “Resident Evil: Retribution,” and we have nine new images from the film.

It would appear as if Milla Jovovich and Kate Beckinsale have created some sort of cinematic tag team of women in tight leather outfits battling supernatural forces at the megaplex. After Beckinsale knocks out her requisite “Underworld” film every couple years, Jovovich seems to follow suit and star in another installment of the “Resident Evil” series (and vice versa). It’s a wonder why their shared studio Screen Gems hasn’t thought to pair the two together for ass-kicking adventures, but for now we’ll have to settle for the upcoming “Resident Evil: Retribution,” which will see Jovovich return to the role of Alice for the fifth installment of the popular series.

It may have been more than forty years ago when Tammy Wynette first commanded that you "Stand By Your Man" but the words still ring true. Well, they do for Milla Jovovich at least.

In case you haven't noticed, we are right in the thick of festival season. Venice is nearing the finish line, Telluride came and went over the weekend, TIFF kicks off on Thursday and festivities in Deauville are now in full swing. That last festival, dedicated to American cinema (ie. getting Hollywood stars over to France to walk the red carpet) boasts a lineup that ranges from the blatantly commerical ("The Lion King") to actually premiering some new, independent movies. And so, model-turned-actress Famke Janssen will show off her directorial debut "Bringing Up Bobby" (not be confused with the direct-to-video Christian comedy) at the festival today and judging by the first trailer, if anything, this thing is wacky as hell.

No, This Is Not A Remake Of The Elia Kazan MovieThe career of Milla Jovovich has been interesting. She first broke out in "The Fifth Element" by bringing a surprising heart to a role that was largely defined by a lack of clothing and who spoke a language no one understood. From there she established herself as a genre star, anchoring the "Resident Evil" franchise while taking on roles in films like ".45," "Ultraviolet," "The Fourth Kind," "A Perfect Getaway" and this year's "The Three Musketeers." Unfortunately, recent efforts to take on more dramatic roles have been unfairly ignored -- she was pretty solid in the underrated "Stone" -- so it's back to her bread and butter. But even we thought she was above dreck like this.
