James Franco Could Replace Jude Law In Werner Herzog’s ‘Queen Of The Desert’

​​Greenlight power is everything, and it often requires a top-shelf or name-brand cast to light the fuse. Werner Herzog seemingly nailed it with the power trio of Robert Pattinson, Naomi Watts and Jude Law for his would-be next narrative feature, "Queen of the Desert" -- the true story of Gertrude Bell (Watts), the traveler, writer, archaeologist, explorer, cartographer, and political attaché for the British Empire at the dawn of the twentieth century. So this should be more than enough, no? But with what one assumes could be expensive location shoots in far off locations outside the U.S., "Queen of the Desert" hasn't really moved forward. In fact, it seemed very up in the air in the last few months. Watts herself suggested the movie was on hold and Jude Law told us in a recent interview that he was likely unable to participate likely because his scheduling window had closed.

After earning a second Oscar nomination for her tortured performance in “The Impossible,” and having recently finished production on her portrayal of Princess Diana (“Diana”), Naomi Watts could certainly use a change of pace from such heavy-handed material. In fact, looking at her filmography from the past few years, you’ll be hard-pressed to find many comedies in the bunch. There’s Woody Allen’s “You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger” and of course her riotous turn in David O. Russell's "I Heart Huckabees." Now she's adding another laffer to the bunch. And we don't see how anyone could pass up the opportunity to star alongside Bill Murray, Chris O’Dowd and Melissa McCarthy...

His options of late have included the con man/criminal drama "Flim-Flam Man" and the period vengeance tale "The Revenant," but it looks like his next feature will find him changing gears in and taking something a lot more lighthearted.

The recent Oscars, it should be said, were not a headline year for the Best Actress race. Of course Emmanuelle Riva, Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Lawrence et al were thoroughly deserving of their nominations, but the category was generally deemed to be a bit thin by Oscar watchers, with something of a dearth of good female roles, bar the five that were nominated (plus a handful of others overlooked by the Academy, like Marion Cotillard in "Rust and Bone" and Emayatzy Corinealdi in "Middle of Nowhere").

It's coming on four years since Werner Herzog's last narrative feature – 2009's "My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done" – and it looks like we're in for an even longer wait. Initially slated to start shooting in March in Morocco with Naomi Watts, Robert Pattinson and Jude Law, Herzog's biopic of Gertrude Bell – traveler, writer, archaeologist, explorer, cartographer, and political attaché for the British Empire at the dawn of the twentieth century – in "Queen Of The Desert," seems to be on hold.

Review: Overwrought 'The Impossible' Drowns In A Sea Of Melodrama

If "The Impossible" moves viewers to do anything, it may be to upgrade their life insurance policy to cover injuries due to tsunami. Following a wealthy family who encounter undeniable hardship, they are also blessed with the kind of luck and good fortune that only happens in the movies (or to people who can afford it). Except as director Juan Antonio Bayona takes great pains tell us, this is Based On A True Story (with the words "true story" then left to linger on their own before the movie begins). And while that may (almost) forgive some of the more happenstance developments in the film, it doesn't excuse the overbearing emotion and narrow focus of this overwrought picture.
