While We're Young, Baumbach
Something to remember: Noam Baumbach actually has two movies in the can. An untitled project with "Frances Ha" collaborator Greta Gerwig (which we bet hits Telluride) and "While We're Young," which goes to Toronto to make its World Premiere.

An actor who is currently thrilling us with the choices he's making is Jake Gyllenhaal. Did you see that terrific teaser for "Nightcrawler" yet? Watch it here. Anyway, another promising project on his plate is “Dallas Buyers Club” director Jean-Marc Vallee's "Demolition," and he's being joined by Naomi Watts.

St. Vincent
In 1998, Bill Murray came bursting back to everyone's attention in "Rushmore," and it's easy to forget that at the time, his most recent previous credits included "Wild Things" and "Space Jam." But Wes Anderson's film showed he had a lot more to offer as an actor. And from there, a new era in his career began, which brings us to "St. Vincent," which almost feels like a weird, "Little Miss Sunshine"-esque glossy redo of Murray's still indelible Herman Blume.

Birdman
Earlier this month, the first trailer for Alejandro González Iñárritu's "Birdman" dropped and it was kind of bonkers awesome. But what on Earth is it about? “It’s less about a guy who played a superhero in big hit movies than it is about exploring the human soul and psyche, and also where we are as a society today and how much importance we place on those kinds of things,” the film's star Michael Keaton told EW. So certainly, not your average comedy or drama by stretch, but the firepower behind the movie is undeniable.

Birdman,
Well, our week just got a whole lot better, because the trailer (and poster) for one of our most anticipated films of the year has arrived. We've been enormously curious about "Birdman," partly because it's the latest film from one of our favorites, Alejandro Alejandro González Iñárritu (or Alejandro G. Iñárritu, as the trailer now bills him), and partly because the film promised to be something of a departure, apparently a more comic vibe for a filmmaker whose work before now, like "Amores Perros," "21 Grams," "Babel" and "Biutiful," has tended towards the bleak.

Neighbors
While our review of the frat comedy “Neighbors” is quite glowing and the R-Rated laffer was a major hit this spring, not all of us agree that the comedy is all that (this writer anyhow). However, one thing that no human on the planet can argue about the movie, full stop: Rose Byrne is excellent in it, probably the best part of the movie and a total scene stealer evidently born for comedy. And sure, we’ve seen her in comedy before, most memorably in “Bridesmaids,” and “Get Him To The Greek,” but in “Neighbors” Byrne has a mix of charm and go-for-brokeness that is vastly appealing.

Naomi Watts hit a brief career rough patch following her Oscar nominated turn "The Impossible." A couple of indies—"Adore" and "Sunlight Jr."—were barely seen, while she was savaged ruthlessly by critics for last year's biopic flop "Diana." But she's got a very promising slate coming up with roles in Alejandro González Iñárritu's "Birdman," the buzzed "Saint Vincent De Van Nuys" and Noah Baumbach's "While We're Young." And she's adding yet another auteur to her filmography.

Review: Unflinchingly Honest And Grim 'Sunlight Jr.' Starring Naomi Watts & Matt Dillon

Sunlight Jr.
To orient you to a filmmaker who's been away for far too long: If Wes Anderson’s central preoccupation is tightly controlled diorama-like compositions, Tim Burton’s obsession is dark, kooky misfits, and Sofia Coppola’s fixation is alienated teenagers soundtracked to exquisite pop songs, then Laurie Collyer’s main absorption is the forgotten underclass and their perils. The filmmaker behind “Sherrybaby” (and the gripping social documentary “Nuyorican Dream”), Collyer hasn’t made a movie since 2006, but her latest, “Sunlight Jr.,” could easily act as the third in a trilogy about the impoverished, the destitute and the depressed.

The Broken Circle Breakdown
If there's one movie you might hear The Playlist prattling on about in the next few weeks, it's Felix van Groeningen's "Broken Circle Breakdown." Having already won the heart of Jessica Kiang when it hit Karlovy Vary earlier this year, I saw it this past week and was equally taken with the moving, messy, ambitious and beautiful film that has already received awards at both the Berlin Film Festival and Tribeca Film Festival. And the film's list of honors may continue at the Oscars, where it's Belgium's entry, but first it's stopping at European Film Awards, where it's leading the pack of nominees.

Sunshine Jr.
Currently in theaters portraying royalty in "Diana," the upcoming indie "Sunlight Jr." is a reminder of the range Naomi Watts can deliver. Here in a completely different role, she sheds designer fashion and opulence for discount chain clothes and a grittier tale about two people just trying to make it to the next day.
