Naomie Harris To Play Winnie Mandela Opposite Idris Elba In 'Long Walk To Freedom'; Justin Chadwick In Talks To Direct

A film adaptation of "Long Walk To Freedom," Nelson Mandela's memoir of his time in prison under South African apartheid, his subsequent release, and rise to the presidency, has been, ironically, a long time coming. Back in the 1990s, "Elizabeth" director Shekhar Kapur was attached to direct a version starring Morgan Freeman as Mandela, but the project never came together, and Freeman would later take on the role in Clint Eastwood's "Invictus." More recently, Tom Hooper flirted with the project before "The King's Speech" got underway and sent him into the stratosphere, but again, the stars never aligned properly.

Sam Mendes' James Bond Film Officially Titled 'Skyfall,' Movie Is A Stand-Alone Story

First Synopsis Suggest That Judi Dench's M Will Be Front-And-CenterUpdate: The official Bond twitter account, @007, have revealed the first synopsis for the project, which reads: "Bond's loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost." It certainly backs up the idea that it's a stand-alone tale, and suggests a bigger role for Dench, as Bond's superior M, than ever before. Intriguing stuff...

Naomie Harris Will Play Moneypenny In 'Bond 23,' Javier Bardem & Ralph Fiennes Locked In

For the most part, the Daniel Craig-era of Bond has left behind many of the franchise's most familiar tropes; aside from Judi Dench as MI6 head honcho M, and the CIA agent Felix Leiter played by Jeffrey Wright, it's a been a fresh start: no Q, no Blofeld, no SPECTRE, no gadgets. It worked out nicely in "Casino Royale," not so well in "Quantum of Solace," and now it appears that at least one classic Ian Fleming-created character is going to appear in the latest, Sam Mendes-directed entry in the series, currently known only as "Bond 23."

After breaking through in 2002 in Danny Boyle‘s “28 Days Later," Naomie Harris seems poised for big things. She's landed roles in a number of Hollywood movies including a couple "Pirates Of The Caribbean" films, “Miami Vice,” “Street Kings,” "Ninja Assassin" and most recently (and notably), had a role in the critically acclaimed "The First Grader." Earlier this year, she was briefly rumored for a part in the currently delayed "The Dark Tower" mega franchise but another blockbuster series appears to be interested in the actress.

When we interviewed Danny Boyle a few months back, around the time that his humanist survival tale "127 Hours" was hitting screens, we overheard him talking to someone about his upcoming "Frankenstein" play. "Would it play on the West End?" the person asked, referring to the London version of Broadway. "No, no, no," the typically exuberant Boyle said. "It's a little too extreme for that crowd."

Rumor: Is Naomie Harris Being Courted For The Female Lead In Ron Howard's 'The Dark Tower?'

You wouldn't know it from this week's milquetoast Vince Vaughn/Kevin James comedy "The Dilemma," but director Ron Howard, of all people, is about to embark on one of the most ambitious projects Hollywood has ever seen: an adaptation of Stephen King's mammoth seven-book fantasy opus "The Dark Tower," which will stretch across three big-screen features, broken up by two TV series which will all feature the same cast. The scope of the adaptation alone is an impressive enough feat, if it's seen through, but when taking into account the bonkers, meta-fictional nature of the source material, it's hard not to impressed by Howard's cojones, even if we're unconvinced that he's got the skills to pull it off.
