Gone Girl Ben Affleck
"Gone Girl" certainly has a lot of variables at play. On the one hand, it co-stars Neil Patrick Harris and Tyler Perry, not the names you might immediately associate with a David Fincher film. On the other hand, it's based on a bestseller by Gillian Flynn (who wrote a new ending for the film), it brings Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross back to score, and the material is right in Fincher's thriller wheelhouse. The result? Well, judge for yourself, as the first trailer is here.

A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas Neil Patrick Harris
While we already have David Fincher's "Gone Girl" on alert as a possible Best Picture contender, there are some variables to consider in the Ben Affleck starring thriller, based on the bestselling book by Gillian Flynn. Notably, the casting has some interesting choices in the shape of roles for Tyler Perry and Neil Patrick Harris. And eyebrows may be further raised by the news of what sounds like a fairly intense sex scene between Harris and titular gone girl, played by Rosamund Pike.

A Million Ways to Die in the West'
While Seth MacFarlane could've taken the easy road and simply cranked out a sequel following his surprise smash hit "Ted" (though, yes, "Ted 2" is slated for a 2015 release) he chose to raise his game for his sophomore feature film. Taking a lead role, and tackling a genre that's tricky to pull off (Western Comedy), the result is "A Million Ways To Die In The West" and the first trailer is here.

Few literary adaptations are as hotly anticipated as David Fincher's "Gone Girl." The novel by Gillian Flynn was a bona fide literary sensation, selling more than two million copies in print and digital editions by the end of its first year of publication, and every aspect of the film's casting has been obsessed over. With Ben Affleck in the role of Nick Dunne, whose wife Amy (Rosamund Pike) mysteriously vanishes, leaving him as the prime suspect, it was just a matter of filling out the supporting cast, something that is very near completion with Kim Dickens, Patrick Fugit and Carrie Coon joining the film and Tyler Perry confirmed for a role.

Smurfs 2
For those without small children and only a passing interest in registering what plasters New York City bus stops: yes, there is a movie called "The Smurfs 2." It's a sequel to an unreasonably successful movie called "The Smurfs" from way back in the year of our lord 2011. The original film starred Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays as a pair of modern day New Yorkers who are visited by The Smurfs, a clan of tiny blue humanoids who battled an evil wizard (Hank Azaria under rubbery prosthetics), who caused all sorts of mischief and kind of made the movie into an unofficial remake of "Gremlins 2: The New Batch." The sequel finds the same humans and a couple of the same Smurfs, only the location has been changed to Paris, France, and for some reason noted Irish actor Brendan Gleeson is along for the ride. We suspect that a house payment was due. Or he wanted to buy a new boat.

Well, that was a lot of drama for a moment. With names like Natalie Portman, Charlize Theron, Emily Blunt, Abbie Cornish, Olivia Wilde and Julianne Hough (really) all being tossed around as potential leads for David Fincher's "Gone Girl," the long-pegged frontrunner has officially landed the job.

Was it beginner's luck, or is Seth MacFarlane the new R-rated comedy king? With his feature directorial debut "Ted" taking over $540 million worldwide last year, it certainly went way above and beyond what anyone was expecting of a movie with a talking, foul-mouthed teddy bear and Mark Wahlberg. And Universal is hoping MacFarlane will do it again with "A Million Ways To Die In The West." The film carries another high-concept premise, except there will be a couple of small changes: MacFarlane himself will take the lead role, and it will boast even more stars than his last effort.

Sitcoms are a notoriously tricky beast to handle in terms of success, simply because if a show grows enormously in popularity and critical regard, so will the cast members who feature prominently in it, therefore leading to tempting offers for them from higher-profile projects. “How I Met Your Mother” is a sterling example of such a conflict, with a breakout cast including Jason Segel, Neil Patrick Harris, and Josh Radnor, who have established major careers outside of the show, but nevertheless CBS are still confidently pushing for a new season.
