Hateship, Loveship
Following the smash success of "Bridesmaids," Kristen Wiig has actively subverted the obvious expectations of the career choices that would follow a hit film. The actress has largely gravitated toward small-scale projects ("Girl Most Likely," "Friends With Kids"), in roles that still fit within her wheelhouse, but also allow an opportunity for Wiig to exercise the kind of acting chops that more mainstream fare doesn't afford very often. But "Hateship Loveship" is Wiig's most atypical role and turn to date, leading an ensemble cast in a drama about a family adrift in the wake of death, and the one woman who manages to keep them from completely splitting apart.

Hateship, Loveship
The pain of loss, the resentment of failure and the hope of a new life are the dramatic elements that come together in "Hateship Loveship," a minor key story about the lingering effects of death on one family, and the stranger who helps them get put back together.

Hateship, Loveship
While Kristen Wiig has done her share of logical post-"Bridesmaids" roles in films like "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues" and "The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty," she has also used the opportunities presented by the hit comedy to try and stretch her acting wings. And she dials it way down for "Hateship Loveship," a romantic drama which finds her sharing the screen with Guy Pearce, Nick Nolte and Hailee Steinfeld.

Following the smash success of "Bridesmaids," Kristen Wiig has actively subverted the obvious expectations of the career choices that would follow a hit film. Aside from this winter's "The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty," the actress has largely gravitated toward small-scale projects ("Girl Most Likely," "Friends With Kids"), in roles that still fit within her wheelhouse, but also allow an opportunity for Wiig to exercise the kind of acting chops that more mainstream fare doesn't afford very often. As the red carpets are rolled up and the screening rooms shut for another year, a final few nuggets of casting news reach us from Cannes. First, via The Wrap, is some news on “Rosewater,” the film Jon Stewart is taking 12 weeks off "The Daily Show" this summer to shoot (don’t panic, John Oliver will be hosting in his absence). Despite Stewart’s comedic day job, "Rosewater" is a drama, based on a true story about Maziar Bahari, a journalist who was detained in Iran while covering the 2009 elections there.

It seems both Richard Linklater and Robert Redford are having a moment. The former will be spending a good part of 2013 doing laps for "Before Midnight," his much anticipated sequel to "Before Sunrise" and "Before Sunset." Meanwhile, Redford has his latest directorial effort "The Company You Keep" hitting theaters this weekend, a surprising role in the blockbuster "Captain America: The First Avenger," an intriguing near silent turn in the upcoming disaster pic of sorts "All Is Lost" and a must-read Esquire profile too. So perhaps it makes sense that these two old Sundance pals should decide to work together.

Review: 'Parker' Is A Visually Indistinguishable, Punishingly Violent, And Painfully Inert Pulp Trifle

The character of Parker is one of those icons of hard-boiled pulp fiction – a smart alecky bruiser created by legendary novelist Donald Westlake (under his Richard Stark nom de plume), who appeared in over a dozen novels, a handful of cinematic adaptations (most notably portrayed by Lee Marvin in "Point Blank"), and a number of cross-media platforms (like the recent beautifully realized comic books written and drawn by Darwyn Cooke). In the novels, Parker wasn't a superhero – he was a criminal who would take a beating or bite a bullet but keep on chugging; an unstoppable everyman.

Well, congrats to the folks behind "Hateship, Friendship" for managing to keep the details on the downlow, to the point where with the film starting to shoot next week in New Orleans, we're only getting details now. And with a promising cast and solid source material to work from, this is one to keep an eye on.
