Richard Linklater To Take 'A Walk In The Woods' With Robert Redford & Nick Nolte

It seems both Richard Linklater and Robert Redford are having a moment. The former will be spending a good part of 2013 doing laps for "Before Midnight," his much anticipated sequel to "Before Sunrise" and "Before Sunset." Meanwhile, Redford has his latest directorial effort "The Company You Keep" hitting theaters this weekend, a surprising role in the blockbuster "Captain America: The First Avenger," an intriguing near silent turn in the upcoming disaster pic of sorts "All Is Lost" and a must-read Esquire profile too. So perhaps it makes sense that these two old Sundance pals should decide to work together.

The character of Parker is one of those icons of hard-boiled pulp fiction – a smart alecky bruiser created by legendary novelist Donald Westlake (under his Richard Stark nom de plume), who appeared in over a dozen novels, a handful of cinematic adaptations (most notably portrayed by Lee Marvin in "Point Blank"), and a number of cross-media platforms (like the recent beautifully realized comic books written and drawn by Darwyn Cooke). In the novels, Parker wasn't a superhero – he was a criminal who would take a beating or bite a bullet but keep on chugging; an unstoppable everyman.

Well, congrats to the folks behind "Hateship, Friendship" for managing to keep the details on the downlow, to the point where with the film starting to shoot next week in New Orleans, we're only getting details now. And with a promising cast and solid source material to work from, this is one to keep an eye on.

You need someone to play vulnerable and grizzled? Call up Nick Nolte. At 71, the actor's voice has never been more gravelly, nor his face more worn and he's been using it to great effect. He was outstanding in last year's unfairly slept-on "Warrior" and in many ways, he was emotional heartbeat of Michael Mann's canceled HBO series "Luck." He's been working at a clip lately, bagging supporting roles in Robert Redford's "The Company You Keep," "Gangster Squad" and "Parker" but now he's going to take a lead.

Well, damn that was fast. And we certainly had our doubts. As we outlined in our review of the first season of "Luck," the HBO horse racing world drama starts off pretty slow, can be frustratingly obtuse at times and is stuffed to bursting with characters and subplots, but by the end of the season it firmly finds its footing and sets up the possibility of a cracker jack second season.

In the seventeen years that they've been running for, the annual Screen Actors' Guild Awards have proven to be a pretty reliable precursor for the acting categories at the Academy Awards. And why shouldn't they? With the actors who nominate their peers for the Oscars overwhelmingly being SAG members, there's always going to be a natural link, and certainly by the time the guild award their prizes, it's a good time to make a bet. In the last few years, they've only missed Penelope Cruz in "Vicky Cristina Barcelona," Marion Cotillard in "La Vie En Rose" and Alan Arkin in "Little Miss Sunshine" as winners, while the nominees tend to match up heavily -- last year, seventeen out of twenty in the acting categories were the same, while all five nominees in the Outstanding Cast category won Oscar nominations.

Nick Nolte has never been one to hold back on ruffling people's feathers. He famously (or maybe infamously) lost the role of Superman after he claimed the character was schizophrenic, and still, at the tender age of 70, carries with him a fuck-em-if-they-can't-take-a-joke attitude that is both irritating and endearing (it helps that he's still an excellent actor, as was evidenced in the oddly ignored "Warrior" earlier this year). In a recent GQ interview, though, he says that one of his more outspoken stances may have cost him a relationship with one of the most powerful directors in town.

A slowly creeping phenomenon of 2011 has been the indie drama "Martha Marcy May Marlene." Ever since its debut at Sundance in January, the psychological thriller, which has placed star Elizabeth Olsen as one of the hottest actresses around, has picked up some of the most glowing reviews of the year (read ours from Sundance here), and played virtually every major festival, currently unspooling at Toronto after cropping up at Cannes in the Spring. Joe Public will get their chance to see it when it's released next month, but the company behind Sean Durkin's film are moving onto pastures new, with two projects in the can, and one more gearing up that's attracting the attention of two veteran actors.
