Here we go, yet another low budget, crank-it-out-in-a-few-weeks Nicolas Cage movie, and if you forgot about it that's cool, because it's hard to keep track of his prolific, if unselective, output. The latest? "The Frozen Ground," a based on a true story tale with Cage as a cop, tracking down bad guy John Cusack, with Vanessa Hudgens playing a prostitute. Obviously.

Yes, the career of Nicolas Cage has taken what one can argue is a serious nosedive in recent years. His frightening hairline has become the butt of endless jokes, his personal life is always a mess (he named his son Kal-El after Superman and he's on his third wife), and his take-a-paycheck career choices of late (seemingly endless riffs on "Taken" that barely get theatrical releases, things like "Seeking Justice," "Stolen," "Trespass," and on the way, a reboot of bonkers Biblical apocalypse flick "Left Behind" ) have made him an even bigger laughing stock (maybe the tax problems and reported ridiculous spending habits explain these terrible tendencies).

Despite grossing $228 million worldwide, no one seemed to like Columbia's "Ghost Rider," including critics, audiences and star Nicolas Cage. So much so that when it came time for "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance," the studio started over and hired the gonzo action-directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, known for the crazy "Crank" films. The story essentially presupposed the first film didn't even exist and they began with a type of soft reboot. But despite Cage's enthusiasm for this new version, audiences cared even less. Shockingly so. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance" grossed a pitiful $51 million domestically and only $132 million worldwide, effectively killing the franchise.

With “The Croods,” an animated family film from DreamWorks (our review here), premiering at the Berlin International Film Festival, lead voice actor Nicolas Cage was in town over the weekend, and we got to speak with him in a small group of journalists. About the experience of working on the film itself (“It’s like ‘Avatar’ meets ‘Yellow Submarine’ with these people who look like Neanderthals” he summed up) he had nothing but good things to say: “I feel like this is the best chance I’ve had to perform in an animated movie.” But he was also frank and forthcoming about other areas of his working life.

We suspect our reaction may be out of step with the general consensus of press at our Berlin Film Festival screening of the "The Croods" today, if the guffaws and applause were anything to go by, but really that had us kind of baffled. The DreamWorks film, from writer/directors Chris Sanders ("How to Train Your Dragon," "Lilo & Stitch") and Kirk Di Micco ("Space Chimps"), features a starry voice cast in Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds, Catherine Keener, Cloris Leachman and Clark Duke, and an appropriately high concept: the Croods are a family of cavemen who have to evolve suddenly when faced with cataclysmic natural disasters and the arrival of a young Homo Sapiens with the ability to make fire.

To perhaps best demonstrate the polar extremes, the 37-year-old director (who has already made nine features) has had films produced by Terrence Malick ("Undertow") and Judd Apatow ("Pineapple Express"). His body of work thus far has covered intimate indie dramas featuring children ("George Washington"), broad comedies ("The Sitter"), adult dramas ("Snow Angels"), and high concept absurdist swords and sorcerer pictures ("Your Highness"). His oeuvre has run the gamut of styles, tones and genres.

While the buzz on "The Expendables 2" was fairly muted and the domestic gross lagged behind that of the first film, the blockbuster action sequel still netted a cool $300 million worldwide. Given that making these movies doesn't break the bank, it's not a surprise to learn that a third iteration is in the works. While no director is attached, and the script has yet to be written, Dolph Lundgren confirms he'll return for the musclebound action franchise's third outing, which could even begin shooting this year.
