You could think the female lead in "Gone Girl" was on the level of pop culture phenomenon Lisbeth Salander -- and who knows, maybe it could be when all is said in done -- but it speaks to the allure of David Fincher, that seemingly every major actress in Hollywood is throwing elbows to get a chance for the gig. Natalie Portman, Charlize Theron and Emily Blunt have already been named as contenders, with Rosamund Pike emerging as a frontrunner earlier today, but it's hardly a done deal as more actresses are surfacing.

Drinking Buddies trailer
Marking a massive shift for mumblecore director Joe Swanberg, in that it looks like he has an actual budget and is working with people you've heard of, the real pleasant surprise around the upcoming "Drinking Buddies" is that it's actually just a plain, good movie. Catching it at SXSW, we said that "relationships are hard, our biology is essentially wired to be completely destructive to monogamy and without giving away exactly how things end up [the film] does a great job of exploring that friction." Intrigued?

Joe Swanberg may have directed over a dozen films in the past eight years, but none of them have ever really gotten as much mainstream attention as his latest. “Drinking Buddies” premiered at SXSW this spring and it showcased Swanberg’s ability to make a more mainstream film with a starrier cast that recalls the most recent works of his mumblecore contemporaries, such as Lynn Shelton and the Duplass Brothers. Magnolia Pictures picked the film up for distribution shortly afterward and now we have a couple of new images as well as the first official poster for the film.

Olivia Wilde has deserted her post in Daniel Barber’s “The Keeping Room,” the Civil War era dramatic thriller in which she was set to star opposite Hailee Steinfeld and Nicole Beharie. Wilde and Steinfeld were to play sisters who, along with an African-American slave (Beharie), are forced to defend their Southern home from soldiers who have broken off from the fast-approaching Union Army. Thankfully, another solid actress has snapped up Wilde’s role -- Brit Marling will fill in on the now-untitled project.

With the rise of digital filmmaking in the last decade, a new wave of DIY "mumblecore" filmmakers have risen up through the ranks. While initially many of these films were loose and unpolished, they are now are becoming more refined with many of these directors and actors now having basically integrated themselves into the mainstream (or mainstream indie anyway). Of the directors who have come of age during this digital era, perhaps none is more notorious or divisive than Joe Swanberg, the writer/director/editor/actor responsible for 12 films over the last 8 years. With an output that prolific, you would think by now you should know whether Swanberg's brand of filmmaking is your cup of tea or not.

Since 2005, director Joe Swanberg has shot over a dozen feature-length DIY films. He helped kick off the term "mumblecore" in 2005 with his debut, "Kissing on the Mouth," and he's known for micro-budgeted indies like "Hannah Takes The Stairs" (which helped launch Greta Gerwig's career), "Nights & Weekends" and "Alexander The Last." But after making about fourteen features (plus shorts) in about seven years, Swanberg's finally trying his hand at something different: a sort-of Hollywood film called "Drinking Buddies," starring the biggest names that have ever been in any of his films: Anna Kendrick, Olivia Wilde, Jake Johnson ("New Girl"), Ron Livingston and director Ti West.

Review: 'Deadfall' Starring Eric Bana & Olivia Wilde Is Trapped In A Blizzard of Coincidence & Two-Dimensional Characters

"Deadfall" starts off strong enough – three criminals, led by Addison (Eric Bana) and his sexy sister Liza (Olivia Wilde) speed away from some unspecified job (it's later revealed to be a casino heist). It's icy out and their driver (the only black character in the whole movie) overcompensates, avoiding a deer, which sends their vehicle cartwheeling over a snowy embankment. As Addison and Liza climb out of the wrecked car they notice their very-dead driver, his head through the windshield. "He should have been wearing his safety belt," Bana grumbles, dripping a syrupy Southern accent on top of his natural Australian drawl.

For his first feature film, Daniel Barber nabbed Michael Caine and Emily Mortimer for "Harry Brown." Not bad at all. Now he's gearing up his sophomore effort and has lined up three rising actresses to take part.
