Review: Animated Thanksgiving Comedy 'Free Birds' Is A Turkey

In the first fifteen minutes of "Free Birds," a jarringly awful, new animated comedy loosely centered around a bunch of historical anachronisms about Thanksgiving, we're introduced to Reggie (Owen Wilson), a turkey who is seemingly the only bird on the farm to realize that they're getting fattened up for slaughter. He's then ostracized from his flock and given the annual Presidential pardon. While relaxing at Camp David, he's intercepted by Jake (Woody Harrelson), the President of the Turkeys Liberation Front, and boards a time machine in an effort to stop the first Thanksgiving from happening, thus saving countless turkeys through history. Again: this is all in the first fifteen minutes.

Earlier this summer Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson finally reteamed for "The Internship" but unfortunately, it wasn't quite the "Wedding Crashers"-esque comedy we were hoping for. Intermittently funny, it was a pale imitation of their earlier efforts, and even an appearance by Will Ferrell in a cameo couldn't stem the diminishing returns. However, it appears that there was a bit more Ferrell left on the cutting room floor.

Grand Budapest Hotel, Ralph Fiennes
Teased earlier this week with the poster, the trailer for Wes Anderson's eighth feature length effort, "The Grand Budapest Hotel" has finally arrived. The auteur has said several times in recent years that he has no plans to change up his famously idiosyncratic style. "My natural handwriting is neat and it is like my personality. Somewhere along the way I made this choice: I can force myself to not be what I feel I naturally am or I can just go with it and develop it," he said last year in Cannes. "[Repeating myself] is not something I think about. I really think about just the world of this movie, and what this one is going to be." And yes, this 'Grand Budapest Hotel' trailer is very Wes Anderson-y, showing off his second period piece following the '60s setting of "Moonrise Kingdom."

Man, we really feel you parents out there this fall, because there aren't many options out there you can enjoy along with your little ones. Earlier today, Disney dropped a rather underwhelming spot for "Frozen," and now Relativity is trying to lure you with "Free Birds," which looks equally uninspired. Though we will say, the choice for the voice leads we would love to see pair up in an actual movie at some point.

TIFF Review: 'Mad Men' Creator Matthew Weiner's 'You Are Here' Starring Zach Galifianakis & Owen Wilson

Owen Wilson & Zach Galifianakis in YOU ARE HERE
Matthew Weiner’s “You Are Here” is the worst “Mad Men”-related disaster since Sally Draper walked in on her father and Linda Cardellini going at it last season. And that was pretty bad, especially since Sally has already barged in on several passionate trysts—happily, not always involving her old man. “You Are Here” is far, far more soul-crushing: a supposed passion project that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival with an air of mystery. Would Weiner’s first feature be a comedy? Would it have the feel of the modern television classic? Or perhaps seem linked to Weiner’s sitcom roots? And would it be any good? The answers to those questions are yes, no, yes, and my goodness, no.

What once were grand plans for a summer 2013 are now gone. Despite talking about it a lot, particularly on their press run for "The Stooges," it looks like Warner Bros. has finally yanked the lifeline that was keeping the thin hopes of a sequel to "Dumb & Dumber" alive. But perhaps this isn't really a surprise?

This weekend's broad new studio comedy "The Internship" (our review) concerns a couple of schlubs (former wedding crashers Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson) who, finding themselves out of work and hopelessly outdated when it comes to modern technology, apply to become interns at Google. While there, the movie becomes something of a workplace comedy – one in which all of their coworkers are way younger, cuter, and more brilliant.

Review: ‘The Internship’ Starring Vince Vaughn & Owen Wilson

It’s hard to believe that after 2005’s “Wedding Crashers,” Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn waited eight years to team up again (especially given that they were offered countless re-up options after that R-rated comedy surprisingly soared to almost $210 million domestically). Anyway, they're back together for “The Internship” of all movies; a watered-down PG-13 version of these same characters -- it really might as well be them only almost a decade later -- only this time older, more obsolete and jobless. It’s “Google Crashers” minus the piquant humor (for the most part anyhow) right down to the same rapport and character archetypes the two shared in the original ‘Crashers.’

So, will "The Internship" be a comedic look at the issue of unemployment gripping the country, another jaunt for Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn, or perhaps both? The aim seems to be to hit that middle sweet spot, and four clips and a brand new featurette are here to give you another taste of the movie before it hits theaters on Friday.

The Internship
Making a movie at Google’s headquarters featuring a plot that’s largely centered around Google probably has its share of perks. One of which would be the extra (free?) online advertising from two of top three most popular websites on the internet, including the Google-owned YouTube, of course. Now that “The Internship” will be out everywhere in theaters in just two weeks, an amusing little short film featuring Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson, and Ben Schwartz (Jean-Ralphio from “Parks and Recreation”) has popped up on the site for YouTube Comedy Week, and it’s definitely not an advertisement for “The Internship.” Except of course it totally is.
