Known by many network television junkies as Kevin James’ loud mouth cousin on “King of Queens,” and to comedy fans as a self deprecating standup comic whose jokes often favored obscure or nerdy topics, Patton Oswalt has recently emerged as a fine actor following the praise garnered for his supporting role in Jason Reitman’s “Young Adult.”

Going into “Young Adult,” Jason Reitman’s new dark comedy, you kind of already have a sensation that Charlize Theron is going to dazzle you as the boozy, emotionally stunted author of a series of young adult novels who returns to her hometown in an effort to woo a former beau.

Director, Writer & Comedian Patton Oswalt Discuss Black Dramedy At Secret Pop-Up Screening In ChicagoParamount's 2010 Oscar strategy worked in spades: avoid the early fall circuit, keep things hidden until the last minute (December release) and keep them anticipating. This approach garnered "True Grit" ten Oscar nominations and a massive $250 million worldwide gross, and seven nominations and $129 million worldwide cume for "The Fighter." Not too shabby at all. For Jason Reitman's "Young Adult," Paramount seems to be employing a slightly similar tactic.

In contrast to the Best Actor & Actress race, which we've examined in the last few weeks, the supporting categories are looking much more open. A-list movie stars like Christian Bale, Matt Damon, Penelope Cruz and Cate Blanchett, who've all figured in recent years, are mostly absent from contention, and only a few performances have really planted a flag in the category, with some initially strong contenders already starting to slip away.

As far as comedy team-ups go this is pretty inspiring, though we have to say, the pairing of Johnny Knoxville and Patton Oswalt is also kind of strange too.

This business moves fast. We'd barely finished hitting 'publish' on a post about "Community" star Gillian Jacobs joining the Steve Carell/Keira Knightley comedy-drama "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World," and our inbox pinged with a press release from Focus Features, who recently acquired the film. As it turns out, Jacobs wasn't the only actor to come on board the film recently.
