The last time we saw Jake Gyllenhaal investigate a case he went full on obsessed as Robert Graysmith in David Fincher's "Zodiac." While his Detective Loki (lol!) might not lose his family over the case in "Prisoners," he's no less committed. The film — one of two Gyllenhaal is repping in Toronto — is easily one of the most intriguing hitting theaters next month and now we've got another little taste at the ensemble drama.

Hugh Jackman, Prisoners
It was mooted as one of Hollywood script's circa 2009 in fact it landed at the top of the BlackList pile that year. Names like Leonardo DiCaprio, Bryan Singer, Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale were thrown around in several different versions, but for whatever reason the film never quite came together. However, one actor stayed the course. Hugh Jackman was set to play the lead in 2010 and cut to a few years later, the actor was game and ready to play the role in the newest iteration.

The project has been gestating for a number of years, but it looks like things are really moving forward with “Love & Mercy,” the biopic on Brian Wilson. This past January, Paul Dano signed on to play Wilson as a young man. Now, John Cusack is in discussions to play the older version of the legendary Beach Boys frontman.

At this point, Paul Dano has accomplished a lot in his still-young career. He's logged time with auteurs like Paul Thomas Anderson and Ang Lee, starred in strong indie comedies like "Little Miss Sunshine" and "Ruby Sparks," gone the blockbuster route with "Cowboys & Aliens" and "Knight And Day," and last year, he dipped his toe into heady sci-fi with Rian Johnson's "Looper." From to drama to romance to comedy, he's done it all (except maybe horror), but now he's tasked with the tremendous responsibility of playing one of music history's most beloved and influential writers and performers.

How are studios making their decisions these days? Very, very carefully. That's certainly true over at Warner Bros. who this year alone have iced "Akira," are moving very tentatively on "Arthur & Lancelot" (which seems to be on hold), passed on the sprawling "The Dark Tower" and let go of "The Imitation Game." And now they are sending a hit musical packing as well. Jon Favreau's "Jersey Boys" has been put into turnaround.

While David O. Russell's upcoming movie with Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Renner and Amy Adams is in the early lead for cast of the year for 2013, "Prisoners" ain't looking too shabby either. With Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal and Melissa Leo already on board, the long brewing movie has added another very talented name to the ensemble.

A Rockstar Out Of His Element: So Yong Kim And Paul Dano Discuss ‘For Ellen’

In “For Ellen,” which opens this week in New York City, Paul Dano plays Joby Taylor, a frustrated rock star who heads to a snowy upstate town to figure out the settlement of a custody battle for his daughter. It’s an atypical role for Dano, usually seen as quieter, less sexualized characters. Even though the actor has tried to transcend genres through a diverse, young career, few could have predicted they would see the former Eli Sunday as a potential rock 'n' roller.

One of the busier actors in show business has to be twenty-eight year-old Paul Dano. Having turned heads in the moody indie “L.I.E.” when he was only sixteen years old, it was only years later before he was able to stand toe-to-toe with Daniel Day-Lewis in “There Will Be Blood,” cementing his status as a fresh face that wasn’t going anywhere. His latest role is in “For Ellen,” where he plays a rock musician struggling to regain custody of his daughter. However, one look at what’s happened to the others films he’s been linked to in recent months casts a clearer picture of just how in demand he has been, and how opportunities can sometimes fall by the wayside for a variety of reasons.

From the director of "Treeless Mountain" and "In Between Days," comes "For Ellen," a bleak and moody-looking picture about a fuck-up rocker also trying to negotiate being a father. However, is it far too late? Directed by So Yong Kim and starring Paul Dano, Shaylena Mandigo with appearances by Jon Heder, Jena Malone, Dakota Johnson, and Margarita Levieva, "For Ellen" doesn't exactly look like a great time at the movies, but it does seem to feature a commanding performance by Dano. And perhaps one we've never seen from this young actor.

It’s been six long years since Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris’ narrative feature debut, the much beloved “Little Miss Sunshine.” But the directing duo is back with a new film, “Ruby Sparks,” and with it, they prove that some things are worth the wait. With a script by its 28-year-old star, Zoe Kazan, and co-starring her real-life boyfriend Paul Dano, “Ruby Sparks” is a winning, charming yet bittersweet exploration of love and relationships, those that exist in both reality and fantasy.
