For two big tentpole sequels coming in 2014, they are following that playbook in the hopes of a big payoff.

Director Phil Morrison hasn't made a film since his exceptional debut indie, "Junebug," which launched Amy Adams in 2005. Brimming with life, even without the Oscar-nominated and very-worthy firecracker Adams performance, the movie is flush with an idiosyncratic humanity and especially complex and uniquely written characters. However, his long belated follow-up, "Almost Christmas,” arriving some eight years after his auspicious beginning possesses little traces of the spark that made "Junebug" so special.

The story of "Romeo & Juliet" has been told, approximately, eleventy billion times. And we're not just talking the countless film versions. From the stage to television to that English class you slept through, Shakespeare's play about doomed lovers has been rich fodder for creative types, the shining example of romance fated to end in tragedy. You would think that a new movie version might try and twist things up a bit, or bring a new flavor to the proceedings. You would be wrong.

Since “Batman Begins,” superhero films have upped the ante as far as casting legit names to act out action-packed costumed melodramas for mass audiences. But it’s hard to say we’ve seen anything like the upcoming sequel to “The Amazing Spider-Man,” which last week added Oscar winner Chris Cooper to a cast that includes Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Shailene Woodley and Dane DeHaan as well as fellow Oscar winners Sally Field and Jamie Foxx and former nominee Paul Giamatti. That would be a whole lot of acclaim for a small indie film, but it’s also the sort of prestige unheard of for a mega-blockbuster that was received coolly by critics and diehards.

Of all the different kinds of movies Paul Giamatti has done in his career -- from charming low-key indies to prestige projects to period set TV miniseries -- he's never really had a foot in the summer tentpole/franchise game. But it looks like a major summer movie for 2014 will find him making life difficult for one young superhero.

While George Clooney has more than few options for his next directorial outing, it seems "The Monuments Men" is picking up steam. First announced at the beginning of the year, the movie sounds like -- as one writer of the site said: "The Train" meets "Inglourious Basterds" but as directed by Clooney and therefore potentially awesome. Now toss in a potential cast that includes Jean Dujardin, Cate Blanchett and Paul Giamatti? Yeah, we'd be all over that.
