While we're in the last throes of the winter season cinematic blahs, there is a lot to look forward to this spring and summer, and we're not just talking eyeball-bursting blockbusters. New films from Park Chan-Wook, Woody Allen, Richard Linklater and Terrence Malick are on the horizon, and joining those auteurs is none other than Pedro Almodovar, and a bigger bite of his upcoming "I'm So Excited" has landed.

As crazy as this sounds, we don’t have the best memories of the last time we saw Penelope Cruz wearing little more than some lacy lingerie while singing. In fairness, that’s nothing to do with Cruz herself, but more that said singing in lingerie was taking place during Rob Marshall’s tedious musical “Nine.” Cruz is back singing in her lingerie again, and the result is an altogether more pleasant one – she’s teamed up with the Grammy-winning Michael Bosé on a single from his debut album, Decirnos Adios. You can watch Cruz performing the song (which was composed by her brother Eduardo) in the video below and see whether you think her singing is on a par with her acting.

At the beginning of the year we broke down the myriad of projects that Ridley Scott was attached to (he's added a few more since then as well), and the bottom line is, the 75-year-old director just isn't going to get to them all. But filmmaking runs in the Scott family, and Ridley's daughter, Jordan Scott, has already spread her wings. She helmed the somewhat underrated boarding school drama "Cracks" starring Eva Green and Juno Temple a couple of years back, and she's done commercial work as well for Agent Provocateur, Armani and more. But now another fashion label is getting her attention.

Starring Penelope Cruz and Emile Hirsch, the Italian-made picture "Twice Born" isn't on everyone's radar just yet, perhaps because it's an internationally produced picture. But that may be about to change, as the film is debuting at the Toronto Film Festival later this week.

L.A. Film Fest Review: 'To Rome With Love' Is Another Minor Foreign Postcard From Woody Allen

In the recent PBS "American Masters" portrait of Woody Allen by director Robert Weide, Allen describes how he has a file folder filled with hundreds of loglines for movies he has come up with over the years; after completing each film, he sorts through them, finds one that speaks to him at the time and writes it up. To that end, "To Rome With Love" feels like four minor stories that Allen found in a pile and loosely stitched together in a narrative tied to Rome. That said, Rome is beautiful, and a mouthwatering set for any director. Unfortunately, you can't build a movie on a set alone.

When Antonio Banderas and Pedro Almodovar unveiled "The Skin I Live In" in 2011, it marked their first collaboration in over twenty years, in a film that was excitingly new territory for both director and actor. We wondered how long it would be before the duo paired up again, and thankfully, the wait will be shorter than two decades.

If you're only going to shoot a couple of movies in one year, making them with Ridley Scott and Pedro Almodovar is not a bad way to go, and that seems to be the game plan for Penelope Cruz.

Casting a movie can be difficult, especially when trying to attract top talent to a film when they undoubtedly have other offers, or trying to pick someone right for a role when the studio wants a big name. But not if you're Ridley Scott and you're working with a script by Cormac McCarthy. Big names have been breaking down the door to join "The Counselor," and that run continues today.

While there are still those who will bitch and moan that Woody Allen's comedies haven't evolved much over the past few decades, for those with appropriate expectations, the director's films are -- even at their flimsiest -- generally a delightful annual treat. And so it goes with "To With Rome Love," which hardly breaks new ground, but offers up enough charms that we're looking forward to it.
