The Counselor, Bardem, Fassbender
Portended by a brief sampling of author Cormac McCarthy's screenplay earlier this month, the teaser trailer for Ridley Scott's upcoming crime flick, “The Counselor,” dropped yesterday, and it promises a glossy, tense cocktail of haircuts and backstabbing, with Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz, and a slew of others all looking to carve out some financial gain. Now, a few new images from the picture have dropped to tantalize for its fall release.

The Counselor, skip
Has Ridley Scott been watching Michael Bay movies? We can't remember the last time the veteran director delivered something this aesthetically slick and glossy, and it's an interesting veneer to add to what sounds like a gritty as fuck crime pic. Strap in, because the first international teaser trailer for "The Counselor" is here.

Upon introducing his latest film, “I’m So Excited” at the opening night of the Los Angeles Film Festival, Pedro Almodovar took care to explain that in Spanish, the title of his film has a double meaning— as he said, “horny.” And yes, the characters aboard his doomed flight are indeed, very, very libidinous. Almodovar also explained that “I’m So Excited” allows him to take a catastrophe and turn it into a party. With that idea in mind, it helps to see the bigger picture Almodovar is trying to paint with what seems like a silly sex farce on a plane.

With Javier Bardem giving James Bond trouble as the baddie Silva in "Skyfall," could producers be keeping it in the family for the Bond girl for "Bond 24"? If rumors coming out of the UK are accurate that could be the case, but we'll see how it plays out.

While we're in the last throes of the winter season cinematic blahs, there is a lot to look forward to this spring and summer, and we're not just talking eyeball-bursting blockbusters. New films from Park Chan-Wook, Woody Allen, Richard Linklater and Terrence Malick are on the horizon, and joining those auteurs is none other than Pedro Almodovar, and a bigger bite of his upcoming "I'm So Excited" has landed.

As crazy as this sounds, we don’t have the best memories of the last time we saw Penelope Cruz wearing little more than some lacy lingerie while singing. In fairness, that’s nothing to do with Cruz herself, but more that said singing in lingerie was taking place during Rob Marshall’s tedious musical “Nine.” Cruz is back singing in her lingerie again, and the result is an altogether more pleasant one – she’s teamed up with the Grammy-winning Michael Bosé on a single from his debut album, Decirnos Adios. You can watch Cruz performing the song (which was composed by her brother Eduardo) in the video below and see whether you think her singing is on a par with her acting.

At the beginning of the year we broke down the myriad of projects that Ridley Scott was attached to (he's added a few more since then as well), and the bottom line is, the 75-year-old director just isn't going to get to them all. But filmmaking runs in the Scott family, and Ridley's daughter, Jordan Scott, has already spread her wings. She helmed the somewhat underrated boarding school drama "Cracks" starring Eva Green and Juno Temple a couple of years back, and she's done commercial work as well for Agent Provocateur, Armani and more. But now another fashion label is getting her attention.

Starring Penelope Cruz and Emile Hirsch, the Italian-made picture "Twice Born" isn't on everyone's radar just yet, perhaps because it's an internationally produced picture. But that may be about to change, as the film is debuting at the Toronto Film Festival later this week.

L.A. Film Fest Review: 'To Rome With Love' Is Another Minor Foreign Postcard From Woody Allen

In the recent PBS "American Masters" portrait of Woody Allen by director Robert Weide, Allen describes how he has a file folder filled with hundreds of loglines for movies he has come up with over the years; after completing each film, he sorts through them, finds one that speaks to him at the time and writes it up. To that end, "To Rome With Love" feels like four minor stories that Allen found in a pile and loosely stitched together in a narrative tied to Rome. That said, Rome is beautiful, and a mouthwatering set for any director. Unfortunately, you can't build a movie on a set alone.
