TIFF '11 Review: Fernando Meirelles' International Love Story '360' May Leave His Fans Heartbroken

In a photo studio in Vienna, a sleazy photographer (Johannes Krisch) is coaxing a young Slovakian woman Mirkha (Lucia Siposová) into posing for her first nude pictures. We soon find out this man is also a pimp and the pictures are for luring clients on the internet. Her younger sister Anna (Gabriela Marcinkova) tries to persuade her to reconsider but she has her mind made up. She needs the money and wants to change her life. Her sister intones through darkly humorous voiceover “If there’s a fork in the road, take it.” It’s a highly provocative opening for what ends up being just a so-so anthology of interweaving tales, even though director Fernando Meirelles ("City Of God," “The Constant Gardener”) assembles an international cast with interwoven stories spanning Vienna, Paris, London, Bratislava, Rio, Denver and Phoenix.

Last time we saw the handsome Tom Hiddleston he was moments from having the Tesseract in his hand at the close of "Thor." It looks like he's gotten his hands on a far more enchanting item in the poster for "The Deep Blue Sea," as he clutches the lovely Rachel Weisz in the throes of passion. Lucky Loki.

Schoolboy euphemisms aside, there are presumably worse predicaments to find yourself in than being bookended by Rachel Weisz. No sooner had the organisers of the London Film Festival announced that one of Weisz’s forthcoming films would open the proceedings, Fernando Meirelles' “360,” when Empire got word that the actress’ long-awaited lead performance in Terence Davies’ “The Deep Blue Sea” will close out the festival. As is usually the case for the LFF, they’re cherry-picking the best of what’s on offer elsewhere. Both “360” and “The Deep Blue Sea” will premiere at Toronto in September, and the latter will also crop up at the San Sebastian International Film Festival the same month. An adaptation of the famous Terence Rattigan play (and not the Renny Harlin sharks-with-Alzheimer’s laff-fest) the film, which also stars Tom Hiddleston and Simon Russell Beale, tells the tale of a suicidal, adulterous woman who leaves her husband and shacks up with a boozy ex-Royal Air Force pilot.

Damn, this is major fine casting. Edward Norton is in negotiations to play the villain in Tony Gilroy's "The Bourne Legacy" which is already set to star "The Hurt Locker" lead Jeremy Renner. Currently there are no further details on Norton's role, how it will play into Gilroy's continuation of the 'Bourne' saga, but we know that Matt Damon won't be returning and by all accounts this is a side-story that exists within the realm of the greater 'Bourne' universe.

In what is likely another ridiculous decision by the Motion Picture Association of America, the new thriller "Dream House" will still receive an R-rating upon its release. The Hollywood Reporter announced that the movie, which stars Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz has lost the appeal for a lesser rating put forth by Morgan Creek, who produced and financed the project. Never ones to be verbose or clear in their decisions, the Classification and Rating Appeals Board (an arm of the MPAA) simply stated that the rating was based on "some violence" that is featured in the film. Well, that clears it up.

Film Will Premiere On The Fall Festival CircuitWhile it may not have as much heat right now as a number of other films gearing up for awards contention later this year, Terence Davies' "The Deep Blue Sea" is certainly one to be keeping an eye on. The legendary director who works about as often as Terrence Malick, delivered his last film, the documentary/memoir/tone poem “Of Time and the City” four years ago. Eight years before that was “The House of Mirth.” But with Rachel Weisz and Tom Hiddleston leading the way, his latest is certainly one that will be drawing a lot of attention.

Well, while we might roll our eyes slightly when it comes to the idea of "Oz The Great & Powerful," a prequel to classic "The Wizard of Oz," it's hard to deny that director Sam Raimi has landed a mightily impressive cast. The "Spider-Man" helmer might have lost Robert Downey Jr., who was originally intended for the lead role of Oscar Diggs (aka Oz), a conman who ends up being transported to the magical land seen in the 1939 Judy Garland musical, and becomes embroiled in a conflict between three witches, but he managed to replace him with newly anointed Oscar-nominee James Franco.
