Review: 'Peep World' Gathers A Promising Cast And Does Nothing With Them

Word on the IFC-distributed comedy "Peep World" has been enormously quiet, even for those who scour for the latest in upcoming indies. With a cast consisting of Michael C. Hall, Sarah Silverman, Rainn Wilson, Judy Greer, Kate Mara, Ronn Rifkin, and Lesley Ann Warren flying under the radar like this without any buzz, it can't be a good thing. Barry W. Blaustein's second foray into narrative filmmaking (his first was, and let us never forget it, "The Ringer") is devoid of what makes comedy films work, including the whole "making the audience laugh" part.

In the immortal words of C&C Music Factory, "Hesher," a dark comedy/drama concoction from co-writer/director Spencer Susser, is very much a thing that makes you go "hmmmm." This might not be a bad thing (to tell you the truth we're still parsing through our thoughts on the film), but it certainly exists – it's the kind of movie you're thinking about days after you've seen it, whether you want to or not.

In James Gunn’s “Super” (review here), Rainn Wilson plays a mild-mannered man who reacts to the “evil” in the world by donning a superhero costume and fighting crime. Of course, it’s never that simple when you’re dealing with Gunn and Wilson. As deranged as Gunn’s previous films have been (particularly his early roots at Troma), Wilson is an equally unpredictable mind, crafting an onscreen persona that continually subverts expectations.

“Shut up, Crime!” bellows Rainn Wilson in “Super.” Such a random demand is highlighted by the outsized appearance of the speaker, clad in thick red fabrics, stocky and pear-shaped within a makeshift superhero costume. It serves as a power fantasy for him, a power fantasy for us. As seen through the eyes of writer-director James Gunn, a man of notably questionable taste, this is no ordinary fantasy.
