Interviews are a necessary evil for actors and directors, part of the slog of promoting a movie, and while some can manage to endure the process, it seems Ray Liotta wasn't ready to play nice when speaking with the Examiner doing his duty for "The Iceman." Maybe he was just in a foul mood or really had to be somewhere else (we'll get to that), but when the actor wasn't dropping terse answers, he was weighing in on the comparative success of his recent movies.

Are we living in a post-gangster movie age? From the early talkies to the Oscar-winning success of “The Departed,” the genre has been ever-popular and responsible for seminal films from “White Heat” and “The Godfather” to “Goodfellas” and “Pulp Fiction.” But one struggles to think of a standout film in the genre since Scorsese's Oscar winner, with memorable mobsters now coming from television rather than the movies. We’re sure that someone will come along and give the form new life one of these days, but that reinvention of the wheel doesn’t come from Ariel Vroman’s “The Iceman,” which is decent enough, but fails to cover ground that hasn’t already been covered many times before.

Way back in the 1990s, Ray Liotta was a pretty big deal for a while there. Of course, he broke out in Martin Scorsese's "Goodfellas," but he also earned attention for playing Shoeless Joe Jackson in "Field Of Dreams." At any rate, by time 1999 rolled out, he could be cast in "Muppets In Space" as a familiar face, and he was, playing a security guard, giving parents something to smile at during the movie that they dragged their kids to. Well, it seems Liotta liked his time acting opposite the Muppeteers so he's gonna do it again.

2013 could prove to be the year of Robert Rodriguez. The prolific filmmaker has always been uber-productive, but this year, we'll get a double dose: he'll have two films hit theaters a month apart of each other. The first, "Machete Kills" will land in theaters on September 13th via Open Road and and then four weeks later, Dimension Films' "Sin City: A Dame To Kill For" will follow. And with cameras rolling on the highly anticipated follow-up to "Sin City," three more actors have joined the cast.

If there's one genre that's more played out than the mob movie, it's the hitman picture. But can being based on a real-life tale give a film a little added edge when it falls into both categories? That's what the makers of "The Iceman" are hoping, and a stellar cast, led by Oscar-nominee Michael Shannon, and a premiere at the Venice Film Festival, out of competition, are certainly boding well. While much of the hype on The Weinstein Company's fall slate has centered around Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained," Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" and David O. Russell's "Silver Linings Playbook," one film still flying well under the radar is Andrew Dominik's "Killing Them Softly" starring Brad Pitt. Though it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this spring, and has a new October release date now set (essentially swapping places with PTA's movie), it's still the only film of the bunch without a trailer. So until then, some images will have to do.
