Next month will be an important one for Ryan Reynolds and Reese Witherspoon. The former is bruised after a pair of summer flops last year, "Green Lantern" and "The Change-Up," and will be hoping to cement his A-list status opposite Denzel Washington in "Safe House," while the latter hasn't had an unqualified hit since "Four Christmases" in 2008, and is hoping to turn that around by starring opposite Tom Hardy and Chris Pine in McG's "This Means War." But while they wait for their blockbuster drawing power to be tested, the pair are planning to team up for the first time for a project with more serious intent.

The saga of the West Memphis Three is far from over. "Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory" hits HBO next month and the Peter Jackson-produced documentary "West Of Memphis" will make its premiere at Sundance in January. Their story will still very much be in the public eye for the next while, and now, the West Memphis Three will be getting the big screen movie treat courtesy of Atom Egoyan.

With "J. Edgar" now in theaters (sidenote: don't believe the vitriolic reviews, it's uneven, but lots to admire) Clint Eastwood has a bit of free time. His next film is supposed to be "A Star Is Born," but with the lead star, Beyoncé preggers, production has been put on hold. So what's he gonna do instead? Take a lead role in "Trouble With The Curve," the directorial debut of his longtime colleague, friend and Malpaso Productions pal Robert Lorenz. While Sandra Bullock was one of the first names to be looking at the co-starring role, she has moved on and now two more names have surfaced.

It looks Reese Witherspoon is mixing it up, as the actress usually does. Earlier this year she starred in the period romancer "Water For Elephants" with Robert Pattinson, and in early 2012 Tom Hardy and Chris Pine will battle over her in McG's "This Means War." This fall she spent time hanging around indie filmmaking rising star Jeff Nichols, starring in his next effort, "Mud," and after that she's pairing up with a respected helmer for a new comedy.

Shannon Studying Ulysses S. Grant And Other Generals For His Zod Role In 'Superman'Things are looking pretty good for Arkansas filmmaker Jeff Nichols. A quick summer shoot for his sophomore offering "Take Shelter" (starring Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain) lead to it being sold to Sony Picture Classics before even playing the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. The quiet, occasionally startling meditation on marriage and fatherhood received rave reviews during its time at both the former festival and Cannes, picking up two prizes from the Croisette on its way out. But Nichols didn't bask in the glory for too long, as he was already busy setting up his third feature, the Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon-lead "Mud."

Matthew McConaughey & Reese Witherspoon Will Get Dirty In 'Mud' For Director Jeff Nichols

Are we witnessing the renaissance of Matthew McConaughey? That would certainly appear to be the case. The actor seemed to be stuck in a rut of terrible rom-coms (see every movie he did with Kate Hudson) and failed tentpoles ("Sahara"), and we wondered what happened to the actor who charmed us in "Dazed & Confused" and impressed in "A Time To Kill." Well, the actor woke up one morning and decided to line up an array of solid film projects. This year has already seen "The Lincoln Lawyer" become a sleeper hit and favorite with critics and he's been busy lining up auteur-driven projects with Richard Linklater's "Bernie," William Friedkin's "Killer Joe" and Lee Daniels' "The Paperboy" all coming. And now he's throwing his weight behind one of the best young American directors working right now.

It can be puzzling how A-list actresses make their choices, but you just have to remember that most of them get paid a lot of money to make movies that aren't very good. Take Reese Witherspoon. Since her well-deserved Oscar for "Walk the Line" in 2005 her box office record has been up and down, as for every "Four Christmases" or "Water For Elephants," there was a "Rendition" or "How Do You Know" -- and none of them have exactly been a critical darling. She keeps finding employment because her movies bring in the bucks, even if nothing she's made in the last few years has had any real substance.
