The Trip to Italy
Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon's “The Trip” was a hard thing to pin down: it was a BBC TV series that was recut into a movie, and a travel documentary that didn't really document anything much, in which the two British comedians played some indeterminately exaggerated/scripted/improvised versions of themselves. But despite nobody quite knowing what it was, a lot of people liked its meandering, mild comedy style and the interactions of the two master comedians: hence the similarly imprecise sequel, “The Trip To Italy,” now playing on BBC and to be released by IFC Films (in a shorter movie format) in the U.S. sometime later in the year.

The Trip to Italy
There were few greater comedic pleasures in the last few years than spending time with Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon as they drove around the English countryside, trading barbs, jokes, impressions and eating a string of fabulous meals. Playing heightened versions of themselves in Michael Winterbottom's "The Trip," the pair dished one liners fast and hard over 107 minutes, but that was only part of the story. In the U.K. audiences got the longer version on television, with "The Trip" spread over six, thirty-minute episodes. And for the followup, "The Trip To Italy," the same thing is happening once again.

The Trip to Italy
Even if you didn't see Michael Winterbottom's "The Trip"—and by God, you really should—you likely saw the viral clip from the film, featuring Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon (playing exaggerated versions of themselves) competing in their impersonations of Michael Caine. It was fantastically hilarious stuff, one great bit from a film full of them, and with a sequel on the way, they've got more Caine to share.

Has it really been that long? It was two years ago that Michael Winterbottom's hilarious "The Trip" hit theaters, landing on our feature The Best Films Of 2011...So Far list, and indeed was a highlight for the entire year for many Playlist staffers. The road trip comedy paired real-life pals Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon as fictionalized versions of themselves, traveling through the British countryside, with the former on assignment doing restaurant reviews. But it was really just an excuse for the pair to improvise, talk, squabble, deliver endlessly quotable one-liners, and perform a string of celebrity impressions. Talk has been brewing for a while now of a follow-up, and it's now officially happening.

An assortment of news, rolling in from Cannes like the waves on the beach there. Probably. I've never been. Anyway. "The Raid" helmer Gareth Evans is currently in production on his most-likely bone-crunching follow-up "Berandal," and, while he's got some Hollywood projects in development, isn't going to be abandoning Indonesian martial-arts pictures altogether; Screen Daily report that the Welsh ex-pat will serve as action director on "The Night Comes For Us," a vehicle for "The Raid" vet, and "Fast & Furious 6" stand out Joe Taslim. The film will see Taslim as a Triad enforcer who accidentally causes a massacre, and will be properly directed by Timo Tjahjanto.
