While Robert De Niro's recent career choices have often times been baffling ("The Big Wedding," "Killing Season," "New Year's Eve"), when he steps into a movie of quality, it's a reminder of just how good he can be ("Silver Linings Playbook," the underrated "Stone"). But, it's easy to be short sighted, and with the actor celebrating his 70th birthday today, it's a reminder that De Niro has an entire body of work that will undoubtedly rank him as a legend in cinema's history books.

The Good House Robert De Niro Meryl Streep
While they already have the classic "The Deer Hunter," the underrated "Falling In Love" and the tough indie "Marvin's Room" under their belt, it has been seventeen years since Robert De Niro and Meryl Streep last graced the big screen together. But it looks like we won't have to wait much longer for another movie with the legendary pair as they've got a new project lined up.

The Family Robert De Niro Michelle Pfeiffer
The Robert De Niro hit-to-miss ratio these days simply isn't very good. For every "Silver Linings Playbook," there are things like "The Big Wedding" and "Killing Season" (and that's just in 2013). On the one hand, we're kinda glad to see him working with a director of at least some weight in Luc Besson (though his best days seem similarly far behind him). We just wish the action-comedy "The Family" looked a bit more promising.

Perhaps speaking to the dearth of roles for older actors, or the need for a paycheck, this morning Michael Douglas was honored for his turn in "Behind The Candelabra" with an Emmy nomination. And now this afternoon comes the trailer for "Last Vegas," another movie set in the Nevada playground that finds him hamming it up alongside Morgan Freeman, Robert De Niro and Kevin Kline in a premise that is basically "The Hangover-but-with-old-people."

Review: 'Killing Season' Starring Robert De Niro & John Travolta

The deadening inevitability of “Killing Season” is that, for all its bluster and violence, the picture’s going to end on a ponderous note it can’t quite deliver convincingly. This barebones time-killer from the ruthlessly frugal folks at Millennium Films announces its intentions from the title on, and its two stars—Robert De Niro and John Travolta—seem glumly game to scowl their way through the proceedings with the professionalism of a mercenary, and the passion of one as well.

For a movie that has been in the works for a while, at one time set to re-team "Face/Off" duo Nicolas Cage and John Travolta with John McTiernan directing, the final result here is pretty dismal. Cage was swapped with Robert De Niro (which these days hardly means anything since they both choose awful projects), and the director's chair was vacated by McTiernan and filled with Mark Steven Johnson -- aka the guy behind "Daredevil" and "Ghost Rider" -- and so now we have...this....

The Family Robert De Niro
Robert De Niro is getting back in the family, and no, we don't mean another 'Fockers' movie. Rather, he's getting back in the organized family way, once again entering the game of legitimate business dealings, and starring in the latest from Luc Besson, "The Family" (which you probably knew about under it's previous title "Malavita"). For both director and star, they've had a patchy last few years, with both highlights ("Silver Linings Playbook" and "Stone" for De Niro) and lowlights (wait, what was the last good movie Besson directed?). Can they form a power pairing here?

Now that the Cannes Film Festival is in the rearview, we can't help but start speculating about what movies will hit the Venice/Telluride/TIFF circuit in just a few months, and these two are probably pretty fair bets.

With the 50th anniversary coming up this November, the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas in November 1963 is clearly capturing the attention of filmmakers again, more than twenty years after the release of Oliver Stone's "JFK." Tom Hanks is producing the ensemble drama "Parkland," set on the day of the assassination, and only a few days back, it was announced that Cate Blanchett would star in David Mamet's "Blackbird," a contemporary thriller about a woman who discovers her father may have had a part in the conspiracy.

Trailer placement is a very important thing. You get your promo in front of a film that has the same target audience, and turns out to be a big hit, and you're potentially laughing all the way to the bank. And that's why we've just seen a trailer for "Last Vegas" over at Yahoo -- "The Hangover Part III" is only a week away, and it's the perfect film to help sell CBS Films' aged bachelor party movie to a giant crowd.
