Okay, so it's not quite Jack Nicholson who the filmmakers were hoping for last fall, but a movie with Robert Duvall and Robert Downey Jr. in the lead roles, still sounds pretty good us.

Over the weekend, this writer finished reading "Persuader," one of Lee Child's dozen plus books centering on ex-military man turned drifter/problem solver Jack Reacher, and it only underscores how divisive the casting of Tom Cruise is in "Jack Reacher," based on "One Shot." In the books, Reacher is a six foot something, larger than life bruiser whose sheer physical size can be intimdating to those who cross his path -- not exactly the kind of image you get from the 5'7" Cruise. But with a new image now landing, writer/director Christopher McQuarrie is ready to address the doubters.

You always hear about projects that take years to come to fruition but what makes this one a bit more special is the fact the actor staying loyal through the years is 81 years old and in the twilight years of his career. Robert Duvall hasn't been shy to namedrop "Lonesome Dove" as the "proudest" work  of his career and, now, eight years after first attaching himself to a reunion with 'Dove' scribe Bill Wittliff on "A Night In Old Mexico," the actor is finally set to step in front of ameras on the project next week with young "War Horse" star Jeremy Irvine co-starring and Spanish showman-turned-director Emilio Aragon at the helm.

For a moment there it seemed like "Crazy Heart" director Scott Cooper would just continually keep signing on to a bunch of stuff without ever shooting anything. Indeed, since country music movie became a big, Academy Award winning hit Cooper has put his name to plethora of projects including (take a deep breath): the western family feud saga "The Hatfields And The McCoys" with Brad Pitt attached; an adaptation of William Styron's "Lie Down In Darkness" with Jennifer Lawrence attached; an adaptation of Bob Dylan's "Brownsville Girl" also with Brad Pitt attached; a remake of the Argentinian thriller "Carancho"; former Noah Baumbach project "The Emperor's Children" and the conman tale "The Man In Rockefeller Suit." But it's a gig he took last summer that has now firmly take the pole position with a major star on board.

While the documentary "Lost in La Mancha" drew many comparisons between Terry Gilliam and Cervantes' classical hero, who featured in the director's film "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote," the aborted making of which 'La Mancha' followed, it's perhaps not the most appropriate literary comparison. Instead, the project seems to be closer to Gilliam's white whale from "Moby Dick," an obsession that won't let go of the filmmaker, even if he wanted to.

Robert Forster, Jack Nicholson, Robert Duvall All Rumored Candidates; Film Will Be Shot In 'Black & White'Earlier this year, we revealed that Alexander Payne would be following up "The Descendants," which was only in post-production at the time, with his gestating father-son road-trip story "Nebraska," with Casey Affleck and Robert Forster loosely being eyed for the leading roles (wishlist stage essentially). Little had been heard about the project since then, but now that the George Clooney-led 'Descendants' gears up to hit theaters after impressing audiences and critics during recent festival appearances, it appears that Payne is getting "Nebraska" into motion.
