If you'd have told us a few years ago that Robert Pattinson would be walking the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival, we would've said you were crazy. But the young actor is leading a youth contingent at the fest this year (along with his main squeeze Kristen Stewart and Zac Efron) who will be bringing new energy to a lineup that also boasts a solid list of Cannes veterans.

And yes, it's going to be a freaky time on the Croisette; as expected the trailer also confirms Cronenberg's eagerly-anticipated picture will make its bow in the south of France.

Well, U.K. RPatz fans have already had their chance to swoon at the actor getting all period-drama on them, and now it's America's turn. A new trailer for "Bel Ami" has landed, showing the hunky vampire suck the cash and dignity out of a bunch of women in old timey England.

After the rather staid costume drama of "A Dangerous Method," a film that failed to embrace the kink promised in the premise of an sado-masochistic affair between Jung and a former patient, many started to wonder: had David Cronenberg gone soft? The filmmaker has been steadily moving into more mainstream territory, but generally managed to keep a little of the transgressiveness that made his name with films from "The Brood" to "Crash." But with the Keira Knightley/Michael Fassbender drama? Not so much.

For RPatz fans, the wait has been unbearable. First going in front of cameras in February 2010, they waited patiently for "Bel Ami," hoping it would turn up on the festival circuit in 2011, but alas, it was not to be. Finally, it premiered at the Berlin Film Fetival in February to mostly lukewarm reviews (including one from us), before quickly scurrying into theaters last weekend in the U.K. But a stateside relese date still remained up in the air. Well, tonight RPatz fans will rest easily in the knowledge that Edward himself will be coming to theaters -- and even better, into their homes -- very soon.

From behind, we watch a man in ragged clothes look longingly through the window of a fancy Belle Epoque Parisian restaurant. Inside, richly attired women whisper secrets over brimful glasses of champagne and decadent platters laden with food. Later, the hungry man in his mean garret relives the moment, jealousy and bitterness at the injustice of his situation playing across his face, before the memory of such opulence actually makes him cry. It's a convincing, well-observed moment that sets up a lot of what we need to know about the man's character. Oh wait, did we mention the man is played by Robert Pattinson?

Madeline Stowe Says She Might Age Up Robert Pattinson's Character In 'Unbound Captives' So He Can Still Play The Role

It has been a long while since we've heard about Madeleine Stowe's dream project Western, "Unbound Captives." First announced way, way back in 2009, the film was set to star Hugh Jackman, Rachel Weisz and Robert Pattinson, with Jackman set to play a frontiersman who rescues a woman (Weisz) whose husband is killed and children kidnapped by a Comanche war party. Pattinson was going to play Weisz's kidnapped son, a role that it was reported in 2010 would require him to speak "almost entirely" in Comanche. But despite kind words from everyone about the script, "Unbound Captives" has continued to sit unmade. But Stowe has high hopes that Pattinson will stay on board, even though he's approaching his 25th birthday and too old for the part.

The next twelve months will be something of a pivot point for Robert Pattinson, as by this time next year, the "Twilight" series, which made his name, will be over, and the risk of him becoming a vampiric version of Mark Hamill -- never able to escape the shadow of his mega franchise -- will start to come up; while he's had a few modest successes, none have been massive, or particularly critically acclaimed. But the actor is clearly taking advice from the right people, with two indie films on the way with some pretty high pedigree, the second of which, David Cronenberg's "Cosmopolis" is one of our most anticipated films of 2012.

How do you create enormous internet buzz around a difficult literary adaptation, from a maverick filmmaker best known for his controversial, taboo-pushing work? Well, that's simple; you cast Robert Pattinson, hearthrob for pre-teens and housewives alike, and star of the gigantic "Twilight" franchise. When Colin Farrell bailed on director David Cronenberg's adaptation of Don DeLillo's "Cosmopolis," Cronenberg went to Pattinson to play the lead, a billionaire stuck in his limo on his way to a haircut as the president visits New York, a riot breaks out, and an assassin closes in on him.

Exclusive: With "A Dangerous Method" headed into release next week, thoughts inevitably turn to director David Cronenberg's next film; unusually, the filmmaker shot two pictures virtually back to back, following his period drama with "Cosmopolis," an adaptation of the Don DeLillo novel. And the film hass come with an uncharacteristic level of attention in the mainstream press.
