Robin Williams Heads Down Another Dramatic 'Boulevard'

What’s Robin Williams been up to recently? Well, on the big screen, the answer is not an awful lot. Last year he popped up briefly in episodes of “Wilfred” and “Louie,” and the year before he voiced a couple of characters in “Happy Feet Two.” However, you have to go back to 2009’s trio of the really rather good “World’s Greatest Dad,” the distinctly average “Night at the Museum 2” and the all kinds of awful “Old Dogs” to get anything significant from Williams on the big screen. That all looks set to change though with “The Big Wedding” and “The Butler” (in which he’ll play a priest and a president, respectively) both looking set for release this year, with “The Angriest Man in Brooklyn” already in the can, and now Williams has another project lined up.

Hollywood is a weird place. While it can be known for being forward-thinking or progressive in its politics, willing to adapt to social changes and put new stories on the big screen, like the Oscar-nominated "The Kids Are All Right" that offers a refreshing and modern look at families, on the other hand, it can be strangely conservative. And so, we'll forgive you if when watching the trailer for "The Big Wedding" you might think it was exhumed from a previous decade (or two).

It seems that Robin Williams has learned a lesson in recent years, perhaps most particularly from the critical drubbing that the 2009 comedy(?) "Old Dogs" received, and has retreated to doing more ensemble work, notably providing a voice for the "Happy Feet" movies and playing Teddy Roosevelt in the "Night at the Museum" movies. It was only ten years ago that Williams was working with director Christopher Nolan on "Insomnia," only five years removed from his Oscar-winning performance in "Good Will Hunting." For all the tepid comedies like "RV," Williams like to remind audiences that he is, in fact, a pretty damn good actor, and his resume is sprinkled with indelible performances in films like "Dead Poets Society" and "The World According to Garp," to name a few.

The end is nigh! The currently shooting "The Bitter Pill," starring Channing Tatum and Rooney Mara, marks Steven Soderbergh's penultimate feature film, after which the curtains will close with his long-gestating Liberace biopic "Behind The Candelabra," which films this summer. The latter has now began filling out its cast, with Dan Aykroyd jumping on board to play the famed entertainer's long-term manager, Seymour Heller.

Even though he scripted "American Beauty" for Sam Mendes before his two successful television shows "Six Feet Under" and "True Blood," Alan Ball has only returned to the silver screen for little-seen directorial debut "Towelhead." Last year, though, brought news that Emmy and Oscar winning writer-director (hello EGOT?) was lining up a return with a dark comedy for Paramount.

Given the film was first announced over a year ago, it's not much of a surprise that there has been a casting change on "The Look Of Love." But perhaps more surprising is that most everyone else has stayed on board.

It's been nearly thirty years since the members of Monty Python appeared on screen together in "The Meaning of Life." Thanks to most of the group feeling it was the weakest of their film outings, long-standing fissures in the group, and resistance by John Cleese in particular to a possible sequel to "Monty Python and the Holy Grail," Monty Python have never since worked on the same project since. That said, members have teamed on various projects over the years -- all the surviving members (Graham Chapman having passed in 1989) except Terry Gilliam appeared in Terry Jones' "The Wind In The Willows" in 1996, while there have been a few on-stage reunions, generally with one or more members absent.

Call up your grandma, because in case you forgot, Billy Crystal is back to host the Oscars for the ninth time, stepping in replace Eddie Murphy, after the whole Brett Ratner/shrimpgate fiasco. But just to ensure everyone that they are hip and "with it," a new teaser for the show has just dropped rounding up folks that "the kids" like in a somewhat amusing little spot.

The acting talents of Robin Williams are certainly an acquired taste, especially if you’re someone who doesn’t enjoy having their senses assaulted with performances that range from obnoxious humor in films like “Mrs. Doubtfire” and “RV” to overly sentimental Hollywood treacle like “Patch Adams."

Film roles for Robin Williams have been few and far between over the past decade with the '90's box-office monster mostly limiting himself to independent fare or supporting roles (and we'll politely forget "Old Dogs" ever existed). While it's not exactly a major leading role or anything, the comedian now looks set to edge closer to the spotlight starring alongside some big names for "The Bucket List" helmer Justin Zackham's upcoming wedding comedy "Gently Down The Stream."
