As we said this morning, when news broke of David Fincher eying a producing gig on the HBO remake of the UK series "Utopia," we're patiently awaiting his next feature to get moving, whatever it may be. And the director has been keeping his directorial chops well oiled by jumping into some promo work. Earlier in the year, he dressed up Justin Timberlake for his "Suit & Tie" video, and now he's re-teamed once again with his "The Social Network" and "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" actress Rooney Mara for a quick fashion spot.

Wow, we guess it really was 2011 that Stephen Daldry's "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" hit theaters, and while he's been quiet on the cinematic front he's still been very busy. Daldry was a producer for the opening and closing ceremonies at the 2012 Summer London Olympics but his next movie has been cooking up for a while. Way back in the spring of 2011 it was revealed that Daldry was going to direct an adaptation of Andy Mulligan's book "Trash," with a script from Richard Curtis ("Love Actually," "About Time"). And unlike most movies that sit around for a couple of years, this one has now started to press forward.

ain't them bodies saints
By now, you've heard the praise for David Lowery's outlaw tale "Ain't Them Bodies Saints." Premiering at Sundance in January to all sorts of good word and then hitting Cannes to play the Critics' Week sidebar, the movie continues it's march toward the big screen with a brand new trailer that's as beautiful as all get out.

At the Cannes Film Festival this week, members of the press will get a special screening of "Ain't Them Bodies Saints," the Sundance smash that stars Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara as a husband and wife with a criminal history (he's an escaped convict, she's his former partner-in-crime, together they have a child that was born while he was locked up). And to accompany this special screening, there's a brand new clip that's hit the web, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly.

Rooney Mara, Ain't Them Bodies Saints
After seeing "Ain't Them Bodies Saints" earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, we said in our review that it's "a wholly engrossing and impressive piece of work that the movie world will be talking about all year long." Indeed, the chatter around the well-received film is likely to continue as it heads to the south of France next week to screen for international audiences and critics. And today we have some exclusive images from the movie, which is one of our 15 Most Anticipated Indie Films Of The Summer.

Steven Soderbergh is almost out the door. Last week we rolled out part one of our interview with the filmmaker about his impending retirement from cinema, his process of filmmaking, the "tyranny of narrative," and his upcoming directorial efforts on the stage (including reviving an old film project, "Cleopatra"). Today, we deliver our final part of our lengthy chat with the director focusing on his Scott Z. Burns-penned pharma-thriller-caper, "Side Effects."

Review: 'Side Effects' A Satisfying, Twisty Psychodramatic Thriller From Steven Soderbergh

"Side Effects," a twisty-turny psychodrama and thriller, will occupy a special place in the Steven Soderbergh oeuvre. Since his highly influential debut "sex, lies, and videotape" single-handedly launched the American independent film revival, his body of work has included 26 films that have covered an absurd amount of topical ground, nevermind all the genres he's dipped into. If all goes according to plan, "Side Effects," will be the last Steven Soderbergh movie ever released theatrically. In some ways this puts an almost unfair amount of pressure on the complex little thriller, especially considering that the film may be better suited for premium cable than his upcoming HBO Liberace biopic "Behind the Candelabra." The picture's conspiratorial late-night tone and fleshy after hours luridness was practically built for watching at night, when our parents think we've gone off to bed (think '80s films directed by folks like Adrian Lyne). Like much of his recent output, "Side Effects" is a somewhat slight genre exercise, but given that it's Soderbergh, it's stylistically unparalleled, totally gripping and occasionally devastating in its emotional presentation thanks to its two leads Rooney Mara and Jude Law.

So, we may have had four weeks of movies already in the new year, but frankly, 2013 doesn't start for us cinematically until next week, when Steven Soderbergh's "Side Effects" arrives. It seems to be the first movie of the year that wasn't dumped or forgotten about by the studios, and made with some real intent and purpose. And now another whole new look at the picture has arrived.

Steven Soderbergh’s penultimate film “Side Effects” is, for many people, the first film of 2013 that’s worth seeing. Starring Jude Law, Rooney Mara, Channing Tatum and Catherine Zeta-Jones, the psychological thriller already unveiled a couple of clips, and now three more have arrived for people to take a gander at before the movie comes out a week from now.

Thus far, 2013 has been a major drag for new movies, with January once again proving to be the drop-off zone for movies that studios regret making. But thankfully, February is less than a week away and the cinematic horizon looks a bit brighter. One movie many are already talking about is Steven Soderbergh's penultimate picture, "Side Effects."
