In just over a year, Rooney Mara has gone from the virtually unknown star of the disastrous remake of "Nightmare On Elm Street" to an Oscar nominee. The missing link: her brief, head-turning appearance in David Fincher's "The Social Network," a performance that helped win her the lead role of Lisbeth Salander in the director's English-language take on "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo." But with a hectic schedule, and busy promotional commitments for that film, the actress has taken her time choosing her follow-up.

Well, that was quick. Just one week after announcing it had signed on with Open Road, the distributors of the film, to co-finance Steven Soderbergh’s psychological thriller, “Side Effects,” Megan Ellison’s Annapurna pictures has backed out of the project (however, Open Road is staying put to distribute the film). But it's not all gloom and doom for "Side Effects," though, as Soderbergh's "Traffic" co-star Catherine Zeta-Jones has just signed onto the project (via Deadline).

Well, here's a piece of good news. Attached way back last spring for Kathryn Bigelow's upcoming untitled Seal Team 6 movie (aka "Kill Bin Laden"), we began to get worried about Joel Edgerton's involvement when the project began further casting this fall -- adding Jason Clarke -- and his name remained conspicuously absent.

While "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" might not have been the box office smash the studio were hoping for (it turns out there's a reason people don't open three-hour-long R-rated thrillers the week before Christmas), there's one person who's done pretty well out of the whole thing: Rooney Mara. Only eighteen months ago, the actress was best known as the much-derided lead of the "Nightmare On Elm Street" remake, and for being twelfth-billed in "Youth In Revolt." But then she took a small role in David Fincher's "The Social Network," a performance that saw her win the much sought-after part of Lisbeth Salander in the director's next film, and if anyone's come out smelling of roses, it's her.

It feels like only yesterday we were talking about the back-and-forths on casting, but at long last, David Fincher's take on best-selling Swedish crime novel "The GIrl With The Dragon Tattoo," the first of Stieg Larsson's "Millennium" trilogy, is in theaters.

Filmmaker David Fincher’s brain works in such a way that it moves too fast for his own mouth. He’s constantly ping-ponging around in conversation to a point where he loses you and then you realize, like his beloved protagonist Lisbeth Salander, as played by Rooney Mara, he’s about five chess moves ahead of you and has been discussing four things at once.

Today I had the opportunity to sit down with filmmaker David Fincher, the director of “Seven,” “Fight Club” and his upcoming effort, “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” which lands in theaters on December 21. Fincher recently cautioned to another journalist that he doesn’t answer questions in sound-bites, “they're sound-meals.” And the director, who talks at length in rolling, circuitous, but thoughtful and considered answers wasn’t kidding.

Considering the glut of movies being released over the holidays next week, we’re surprised more of them aren’t looking to give themselves a little distance before the next highly-anticipated picture comes crushing through their gate.

Looking at “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo,” it’s hard not to think of the dark thriller cum procedural as director David Fincher’s “The Departed." Notwithstanding both films being inspired by/remade from acclaimed foreign predecessors, Fincher and Scorsese alike seem to be saying with them, “You wanted me to do this kind of movie? Well, here it is, motherfuckers.”
