Getting a first feature off the ground if no easy feat, but couple that with making a movie centered entirely around the perspective of four young women, and you've got a mountain to climb. "Tanner Hall" marks the debut outing of filmmakers Francesca Gregorini and Tatiana von Furstenberg, not only did they beat the odds, they also managed to luck into a dream cast. Even though stories about women are difficult to finance, not only did the directing pair get their story told, but they rounded up a cast that includes current "it girl" Rooney Mara, Brie Larson, Amy Sedaris and in a surprising dramatic (and partially comedic) turn, Chris Kattan. With the film arriving on DVD and BluRay this week, we caught up with the filmmakers to talk about the movie, and the talent Lisbeth Salander showed in her first leading role.

No, it's not Halloween, but given the amount of black you'll be seeing on screen (and soon in stores, more on that in a second), you might be forgiven for forgetting it's Christmas. And while the mistletoe is being hung with care, Sony are going to be dropping something a little bit nasty in your stocking in form of "The Girl With The Dragon Tatto," and in case you've been living under rock, the film will mark the arrival of Rooney Mara.

Of all the potential Oscar heavyhitters, none remains a more tantalizing X-factor than David Fincher's "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo." Based on a novel by Stieg Larsson beloved by literary enthusiasts and book clubs the nation over, it has a reasonably large chance of being a box office titan and a serious awards contender, even if nobody has seen it yet. But if there's one person that remains skeptical about the film's Oscar chances, it's Fincher himself. In this week's Entertainment Weekly cover story (partially excerpted online), he jokes that “There’s too much anal rape in this movie” to secure major nominations.

While it's not nearly as sexy as the video footage of Terrence Malick in action, directing Christian Bale at the Austin City Limits music festival in September, it's still something. And given how tightly everything else is kept under lock and key for Terrence Malick's films, we'll take what we can get.

David Fincher Views The Series As A "Pervy Franchise"While Rooney Mara eventually won the coveted lead role of Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher's "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo," it was an arduous wait and the list of the contenders was fierce. Sarah Snook, Sophie Lowe and Léa Seydoux were said to be the final candidates, and a mix of established and lesser known names like Ellen Page, Natalie Portman, Carey Mulligan, Emma Watson, Mia Wasikowska, Emily Browning and Katie Jarvis were all in the running at various points. However, people might remember that just before Mara snagged the part, Scarlett Johansson was surprisingly being tipped as a "shoo-in." At the time it seemed somewhat unlikely, but talking to Vogue magazine as part of a profile on Rooney Mara, Fincher confirms that Johansson did indeed deliver strongly at the audition but that she was ultimately just too darned attractive to play the squirrely, oddball and rebellious Lisbeth Salander.
