Considering the spate of remakes and reboots, it takes a real feat to rouse our interest in one. Even with a promising creative team involved, a new version can sometimes just end up feeling redundant with many projects -- some simply don't need to be remade. But at the same time, we're not against the idea in principle -- something like "Ocean's Eleven," "Let Me In" or "The Thing" prove that, with a distinct enough spin, or with source material that left room for improvement, it's not necessarily an evil.

There is no doubt that "Tales From The Gangster Squad" is very, very high on the priority list at Warner Bros. With names like Darren Aronofsky, Paul Greengrass, Francis Lawrence, Martin Campbell, Greg Berlanti, Scott Cooper and Jose Padilha all being tossed around at various points to direct the film, "Zombieland" helmer Ruben Fleischer landed the gig late last year. But WB isn't done yet trying to lure top talent to their crimeland pic.

Ahhh! This is what Ryan Gosling was alluding to. Let's face it, we didn't give a shit about the "Logan's Run" remake throughout its long development history that saw a number of directors -- notably Bryan Singer and more recently Carl Erik Rinsch (who is moving on to do "47 Ronin") -- circle the director's chair. But congratu-fucking-lations Warner Bros., you made us sit up and take notice.

Every year, we wake up for the Academy Award nominations expecting a surprise, hoping the same ten or fifteen movies don't keep getting referenced, honored, what-have-you. Last year, the Academy did a decent job as the field of Best Picture candidates swelled to ten, allowing for more exposure for films from different categories. We're not going to go around endorsing "District 9" as one of that year's finer films, but we were happy it got to sit at the table.

Sure, the internet may be ablaze this afternoon with images of Spider-Man and Captain America, but you know what we're more excited about? This. The firmly excellent romantic drama "Blue Valentine," finally shorn of the albatross that was its NC-17 rating, has begun its limited rollout, and is going great guns, picking up a mean screen average and an impressive haul of over a million on only a few screens. a gratifying debut for a film that became something of a favorite of many Playlist team members over the course of 2010.
