Why are superhero and comic book movies so popular? It may be the comfort of believing there is a clear distinction between “good” and “bad” people, that “good” isn’t such an abstract notion within one’s identity and bad, in itself, is an unchanging, sometimes unstoppable force. There is poetry in this oversimplified view, both in the way it calms the troubled minds of moviegoers and the very notion of an unchanging duality forever at war, one side “morally” representing the winning side, the other not.

Ryan Reynolds Confirms 'Deadpool' Will Be 'Nasty,' 'Hard' And 'Cheap'Showing a remarkable amount of diplomacy, director Mark Romanek has confirmed, as reported a few weeks back, that he was a contender for Fox's already-troubled "The Wolverine" but that he has long since turned down the opportunity. Speaking about the Marvel sequel, he tells DigitalSpy, "That's just one of those stories that floated around. I was on their list, I received the script months ago. It didn't seem like my kind of thing." Given that Romanek is a picky and sometimes prickly director, one who famously bailed on his only other big studio assignment merely weeks before shooting ("The Wolfman"), it's not a huge surprise.

Just in case you didn't get enough DC Comics excitement today with Warner Bros. releasing the first image of Tom Hardy as Bane from "The Dark Knight Rises" in the first of what is sure to be many viral stunts, they've also released the latest trailer for "Green Lantern." As the film is going to be a bit of a harder sell for WB, you don't even have to jump through any hoops to watch it. By releasing a new trailer what seems like every few weeks, the studio has done a good job of turning fan expectations around after some shaky early footage. As someone on Twitter said, "I feel shortchanged on days there isn't a new "Green Lantern" trailer."

Nicolas Winding Refn Producing Icelandic Gangster Thriller 'Black's Game,' Summit Pick Up Dwayne Johnson Vehicle 'Snitch,' & More News From The Cannes BacklogMore news seems to break during Cannes than at any other time during the year, as you might have noticed. And, while we've done our darndest to cover everything, a few things have slipped through the cracks. But because we're completists, and because our loved ones abandoned us a long time ago, we're going to try and run everything down quickly below, and in our post from earlier this afternoon. So, with no further ado:

Alumni of acclaimed hits like "Mad Men," "Breaking Bad," and "The Wire" are snapping up supporting roles in big movies everywhere you look, and it seems like the latest hit is AMC's "The Killing," a remake of the cult hit Danish show, which follows the investigation of a single murder case.

We hope some promotions and pay raises went on around the Warner Bros. marketing department because the studio completely turned around sentiment on the upcoming "Green Lantern." After a dreadful first trailer -- which even the studio admitted was a misfire -- they finally dropped a new look in some fresh, and much more well received footage at WonderCon. The creature designs looked good and the special effects popped, and while there are minor quibbles -- the CGI mask still looks pretty bad -- overall it was a major step forward.

Actor Says The Story For The 'Green Lantern' Sequel Is "Set In Stone" & Hinted At In This FilmCall it comeback week for Warner Bros' "Green Lantern" superhero franchise but a few months ago it was a completely different story. When the EW magazine cover that first revealed lead actor Ryan Reynolds in costume hit, the core geek crowd were not feeling the CGI-created mask or suit. The first trailer didn't fare much better and was criticized by fanboys for its cheap effects and far-too-goofy tone.

Last night, Ryan Reynolds may have said he's reached his super hero film quota with "Green Lantern" already completed and "Deadpool," plus the genre-y graphic novel, "R.I.P.D.," but he may be getting ahead of himself, since none of these pictures has been released. We've been pretty skeptical of "Green Lantern" so far, and more importantly, so has the vocal movie geek community who the movie is aimed at. Early trailers looked like lame SyFy channel tele-movies and even Warner Bros. admitted that all the early footage was weak.

Ryan Reynolds is no stranger to playing a superhero. As Deadpool he was the best part of the otherwise wretched "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," he's Hal Jordan in the upcoming "Green Lantern" and he was the imaginary Captain Excellent in "Paper Man." And while he's not quite a superhero in "Turbo," a freak accident still gives his character an enormous ability.
