Regardless of personal tastes and quality of the product, vampires went through a pretty hot phase for a while there. However, time tends to snuff the flames of fads and one has to wonder if Universal is coming too late to the vampire party with its newest take on the Dracula mythos. This particular project has been kicking around for a few years now, but it finally built up some steam a couple of months ago when Luke Evans landed the role of "Dracula" himself. Now the production has sunk its teeth into a few more notable stars.

If the box office was anything to go by, if you saw any movie on Christmas Day with your family/friends/ON YOUR OWWWWN, it was "Les Misérables," Tom Hooper's blockbuster adaptation of the long-running musical stage adaptation of Victor Hugo's epic novel. Complete with an all-star cast of Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Sacha Baron Cohen, Helena Bonham-Carter and Eddie Redmayne, the film might have gotten some mixed responses, but it was overwhelmingly the favorite choice of audiences on the 25th, and looks likely to be a major force when Oscar nominations are announced in a couple of weeks.

If you were purely going by the posters and trailers, you probably wouldn’t have even noticed that a young lady called Samantha Barks was starring in one of the lead roles in Tom Hooper’s “Les Misérables.” The 22-year-old English actress rose to prominence in the U.K. after appearing on an Andrew Lloyd Webber talent show before finding success in the role of Eponine in "Les Misérables" on London’s West End. After being chosen to fill the role in the filmed 25th Anniversary Concert of 'Les Mis,' Barks then won the role in Hooper’s version too. Sadly, her face and name are not yet recognizable enough to earn her a spot on the star-filled posters, but hopefully that will all begin to change soon.

Our Oscars coverage has, over the last few months, principally focused on the Best Picture race, which makes sense as what films look like possibilities continues to come into focus. But with the dust now settled on the festival season (well, except for the New York Film Festival getting underway today), we want to come in a little tighter, as it were, and start to think about the individual categories.

One of the most exciting things about the coming of the fall movie season is the chance to see some new talent emerge from some of the prestige fare that'll be hitting theaters in the next few months. Last year, for instance, saw the likes of Jean Dujardin, Bérénice Bejo, Eddie Redmayne, Rooney Mara, Shailene Woodley, Elizabeth Olsen and Felicity Jones go from virtual unknowns to, if not household names, than certainly performers whose next moves would be watched closely.

The movie-musical is a difficult nut to crack. The genre's proven the undoing of great filmmakers like Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola, and, in the modern era, for every smash big-screen hit like "Chicago" or "Hairspray," there's a "Nine," a "Phantom of the Opera" or a "Rent" stinking up the joint. But this Christmas' big hope has the kind of pedigree that suggests it's got a better run at Oscar and box-office glory than most.

When it came to our super-early Oscar predictions last year, we weren't too far off when it came to Best Picture, or even the lead acting categories. But Supporting Actor & Actress? That was something of a disaster. Ok, so we called Christopher Plummer's victory, but aside from that, we were way off.

While, generally speaking, fans of the stage show have been positive about the cast that's been shaping up for "Les Miserables," Tom Hooper's follow-up to his Oscar-winning "The King's Speech," which sees him adapt the long running musical version of Victor Hugo's classic novel, there's been one sticking point; namely, the report that country-pop sensation Taylor Swift had been offered the role of Eponine, the spoiled little girl-turned-penniless waif who sings one of the musical's key numbers, "On My Own."
