"The Net," "Firewall," "Transcendence," "Hackers," "WarGames"....they've all tried to teach us the same lesson: computers can be bad news in the wrong hands. One mouse click, and you could be in deep trouble, and that's pretty much the entire premise of "Open Windows" which takes you online for a slightly silly thriller.

Open Windows
When he burst onto the scene in 2007 with his Spanish debut feature “Timecrimes,” film fans saw a potential new high profile name from a nation with a knack for churning out directors who really know how to pack in the thrills. But Nacho Vigalondo’s followup “Extraterrestrial” in 2011 was more of a whimper than a bang. This year, the hope is that his English language debut puts him back in gear. After a six year absence from the festival, Nacho Vigalondo is back at Fantasia, and if he has his way, you'll never look at your computer screen the same way again, especially if there’s one too many windows open at the same time. To help him get an even bigger international boost, he’s got the support of an ex-porn star and an ex-hobbit. Unfortunately Vigalonto's rise has been slowed because those who criticized 'Timecrimes' for being a little muddled in its narrative and those who felt 'Extraterrestrial' was all over the place in tone, will most likely feel carsick by the time “Open Windows” comes to a close.

It seems every few months comes another movie about celebrity obsession and/or the perils of being on the internet, and very few have anything original to say. Which brings us to "Open Windows," an upcoming thriller that looks like a remake of "Getaway" with a laptop instead of a car.

Several filmmakers have their own insight into what the recession has done to the middle class. Few of them have as much anger as David Guy Levy, director of “Would You Rather,” a sinister new thriller opening in theaters this Friday. No, Levy thinks of the general public as prey not to be hunted, but to be toyed with. Why eat the poor, when they can provide entertainment? It’s not the most optimistic outlook, admittedly.

Elijah Wood really likes horror and thriller movies. The actor has been making a big play into the genre lately, starring in the "Maniac" remake, leading the ticking clock race in "Grand Piano," launching his own production company specializing in scares, and signing up to star in the horror flick "Cooties." And now he's jumping into genre waters once again.

In the early days of noir filmmaking, even when a book was the source of the story, the films were made with a genuine sense of danger. Noir was still a new genre, and we didn’t exactly know the rules quite yet. That led to filmmakers essentially writing, shooting and performing what they knew, from the dangerous bar down the street, to the dame with whom they shouldn’t have trifled, to the backroom brawls that had the stench of sweat, desperation, and bourbon. It’s a cliché to point out that yesterday’s filmmakers actually lived life, but it’s true -- the internet hadn’t yet been invented.

If 2012 is the battle of the Snow White movies, it looks like 2013 may be the smuttier war between porn biopics of the infamous Linda Lovelace. Hot on the heels of "Lovelace" shoring up their cast with Demi Moore and Adam Brody, "Inferno" has fired back with casting of its own.

If an alien race were to study our cinema, they’d realize that every man beyond the age of 40 is unhappy and suffering a mid-life crisis. For every happy, well-adjusted middle-aged man in contemporary cinema, there are three more, casually living life out of a suitcase, a bottle, or underneath a sea of unpaid bills and obligations.
