Now roughly six billion people have seen the thing, we can all pretty much agree that Mark Ruffalo and Scarlett Johansson were the secret weapons of superhero mega-hit "The Avengers." The former brought a wry understatement to Bruce Banner, as well as performance-capturing the most effective screen take on the Hulk yet, while Johansson banished any memories of her flat turn in "Iron Man 2" and made Black Widow steely, vulnerable, cunning and funny, often in the same breath.

One film we've been keeping an eye on, and hoping it will pop up somewhere on the 2012 calendar, is Jonathan Glazer's long awaited third film (his first in eight long years) "Under The Skin," starring Scarlett Johansson. On paper, it seems like a straight genre piece or a "Species" remake, with the adaptation of Michael Faber's novel telling the story of a manhunting alien disguised as a sexy woman who preys on human flesh. Well, the good news is two fold. Cineuropa has tweeted that the film is officially in post-production in London after shooting last fall, and they've included the first official image from the movie.

For all the many strengths of "The Avengers," there's one that writer-director Joss Whedon can't take credit for: the casting. Of the main characters, only one, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/The Hulk, hasn't appeared in one of the previous five Marvel movies that have led to this point. So given the casting committee that assembled The Avengers, it's something of a miracle that it's ended up with one of the most enjoyable collection of actors in a big tentpole movie for quite some time.

Everything that works in “The Avengers” really works, but not everything works in “The Avengers.” A virtuoso collection of action set pieces framed by an uninspiring “getting the team together” narrative which should have been accomplished in all of those post-credits sequences in earlier Marvel movies, Joss Whedon’s stab at superheroes delivers plenty of what makes both him and his subject matter appealing, as well as an abundance of mythological set-up that’s somehow simultaneously redundant and contradictory. But as the best (or perhaps most consistently engaging) Marvel movie since the original “Iron Man,” “The Avengers” is a winning piece of popcorn entertainment that does better with characters in an ensemble setting than many ever did when they starred in their own vehicles.

It seems three redheads in one superhero movie is just too much. With Gwyneth Paltrow on board and Jessica Chastain signing up a couple of days ago, it looks like "Iron Man 3" is unfortuantely going to be less one more beautiful woman.

If early reviews are any indication -- including our own -- "The Avengers" is the greatest summer blockbuster to come along in ages. And while many other on the Playlist staff are equally effusive in their praise surrounding the superhero smash-up, this writer remains cautious. The numerous clips which have arrived in advance of the film have been...clunky...and that's no less true of the latest one to land below.

When Mark Ruffalo was announced as the successor to Ed Norton’s Hulk/Bruce Banner for “The Avengers,” many eyebrows were raised and, in the case of the fanboys, many wondered if the actor known for his acclaimed work in indie dramas could do the job. However, if there’s one thing Ruffalo has proven over the years, it’s his versatility as an actor. And at “The Avengers” World Premiere in Hollywood Wednesday, fans appeared largely pleased with Ruffalo’s turn as the big green lug.

"The Avengers" buzz is at an all-time peak at the moment. With the film making a splashy red carpet premiere earlier this week, and with fans heading to advance screenings tomorrow, the Marvel marketing machine is in maximum overdrive, and they've turned the faucet on at full force....

Yesterday the Hollywood Reporter released its cover story on Jeremy Renner. Three years ago the now-41 year old actor had toiled away in Hollywood obscurity, until he bagged his first Academy Award nomination for “The Hurt Locker” and at a time when barely anyone knew who he was.
