The Counselor, Fassbender
Michael Fassbender is an actor in an ideal position right now. He’s got the pick of the litter in terms of scripts and projects, and they are all being delivered to his doorstep. Is he an A-list star that can open a movie big? Not yet, but that likely doesn’t concern him right now (that’s his agent’s problem). What matters to the actor is that he’s working with the Terrence Malicks and Ridley Scotts of the world and he is one of the most sought-after actors in Hollywood at the moment.

Berlin starts today as such, there is an eruption of casting news, so let's get to it. Most excitingly, Justin Kurzel's "Macbeth" starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard has kicked off its seven week shoot, and revealed the rest of the cast and it's a good one.

Thanks to the jaw-droppingly good “Martha Marcy May Marlene,” Sean Durkin has established himself as one of the most promising directors around. We’re going to be all kinds of excited about any project he announces, and on his slate at the moment is the Janis Joplin biopic “Janis” (presumably not starring Jenna Maroney) and the four-part TV drama “Southcliffe” for British network Channel 4. The latter is penned by “Red Riding” scribe Tony Grisoni, and it looks like Durkin is starting to assemble a strong British cast for the project.

The “Prometheus” Blu-ray is on its way and, despite many people being left hugely disappointed by Ridley Scott’s latest, there still seems to be a fair bit of excitement surrounding the home release. Maybe it’s because of what Ridley Scott has been able to transform his films into in the past when given a second crack at the whip, or maybe it’s in the wild hope that there may be enough amongst the special features to make sense of the original film. Perhaps it’s just to see some more of the stunning visuals, who knows?

Well, "Prometheus" is in theaters. And if nothing else, it's been causing more furious debate -- in multiplex lobbies, in bars, online -- than most movies in recent memory. And The Playlist head office has been a warzone, with some loving the film, some loathing it, and some (like our review) falling somewhere in the middle. Name-calling and threats of physical violence have ensued.

A project that we were actively dreading only a few months ago, we are now looking forward to Ridley Scott's "Prometheus" more than any film from the director in years. The helmer's always worked best in the sci-fi field ("Alien," "Blade Runner") and the idea that he's working on a project that's evolved from a full-blown prequel to the "Alien" series to (for the most part -- and we'll get to that in a moment) something very different, and more original, is a fascinating one. While the script has since received a major overhaul from "Lost" and "Star Trek" writer Damon Lindelof, if even a small fraction of the bold ideas featured in the Jon Spaihts draft we read make it to the screen, it's going to be very different from every other sci-fi tentpole out there.
