Cannes is one of the biggest markets, if not the biggest, for acquisitions in the film calendar, with hundreds of deals made, ranging from pre-sales for star-laden properties to distribution rights to terrible B-movies. This year, as with the unusually busy Sundance, has already been packed with deals, happily suggesting something of a renaissance in the independent film world. On top of the news that landed over the weekend that Rian Johnson's "Looper" heads up a pack of high-profile buys also including "Playing the Field," "Arabian Nights" and "The Iron Lady," another of our most anticipated films of the moment looks to have landed an American distributor.

Studio Eyes James McAvoy Or Shia LaBeouf But May Want Aussie Actor For 'Snow White & The Huntsman'Aussie actor Joel Edgerton is on the cusp of making a major mark in Hollywood. The 36-year-old actor has never been lacking for work. Acclaimed turns in "The Square" and "Animal Kingdom" put him firmly on the Hollywood radar and 2011 is already shaping up to be a helluva year as he's already set for the Tom Hardy MMA flick "Warrior" and the big budget "The Thing" prequel. He's also currently filming the indie flick "The Odd Life of Timothy Green." All that's left for the actor to solidify his place among the top leading men is a franchise, and it looks like he's got a couple to choose from.

At this point, we shouldn't have to explain to you why John Hillcoat's "The Wettest County" is already one of our most anticipated films of next year. We're just glad it's happening at all especially after it fell apart early last year just as lensing was about to begin. And now courtesy of fansite Shiantology (via /Film) we have concrete proof that yes, sweet Jesus, this thing is really happening.

It was only a matter of time after director D.J. Caruso closed the deal to direct the long-gesting comic adaptation "Preacher" last month that casting rumors would begin to surface, but who would've guessed they would be coming from the director himself.

Variety reports that Shia LaBeouf is attached to take the lead role in the film adaptation of Joe Hill's best-selling novel "Horns." Keith Bunin has been hired to adapt the novel that centers on Ig Perrish, a young man who awakens from a black-out hangover only to find that he has horns sprouting from his head. As these mysterious horns continue to grow, Ig sets out to discover who murdered his girlfriend and how her death possibly caused these horns to pop out. Sound twisted? Well, it turns out Joe Hill is actually Stephen King's son. Huh.

One of the films we lamented falling apart in our Ten Dead Projects We'd Like To See Resurrected feature was Oliver Stone's My Lai massacre pic "Pinkville." Originally set to star Bruce Willis, Woody Harrelson, Channing Tatum, Michael Peña and Cam Gigandet, the 2007 writer's strike put a huge snag into updates and touch-ups so United Artists shut down the production at almost the last minute. It was a picture that would've found Stone working with some very comfortable subject matter and the cast he had set to go was certainly enticing. Well, as it turns out, it may come back to life.
