As the red carpets are rolled up and the screening rooms shut for another year, a final few nuggets of casting news reach us from Cannes. First, via The Wrap, is some news on “Rosewater,” the film Jon Stewart is taking 12 weeks off "The Daily Show" this summer to shoot (don’t panic, John Oliver will be hosting in his absence). Despite Stewart’s comedic day job, "Rosewater" is a drama, based on a true story about Maziar Bahari, a journalist who was detained in Iran while covering the 2009 elections there.

Tribeca Review: A Drug Trafficking Romeo And Juliet Face The Tragedy Of 'Deep Powder'

It doesn’t get much more Romeo and Juliet than “Deep Powder,” a drug melodrama based on true events but otherwise inspired by a love driven by classic class conflict. The handsome, broke townie in this instance is “Evil Dead” star (deal with it) Shiloh Fernandez as Danny, a puppy dog-cute snow-lift operator. He’s got eyes for kewpie-doll rich girl Natasha (Haley Bennett), who informs her that she accidentally dropped her wallet on the lift, but that she had no pressing need for him to give it back. The shock is that the wallet has four hundred dollars that she presumably won’t miss, which is even more incredible considering this was the early '80s, and inflation translates that to roughly $6,056.55. Roughly. Check the math.

After an underwhelming trailer and flashy set photos, we thought the film adaptation of Max Barry’s novel “Syrup,” might show up at Sundance. It didn't, but along the way, Magnolia Pictures landed the film and, with a theatrical and OnDemand release around they corner, they’ve also dropped a brand new trailer.

The Tribeca Film Festival is rolling out more first-looks. First off, is director Steph Green’s latest endeavor, entitled "Run and Jump." The film marks Green’s return to Tribeca after winning in the Best Short Narrative category in 2008 for her film "New Boy." "Run and Jump" stars "Saturday Night Live" alumnus Will Forte in a rare dramatic turn (perhaps a preview of things to come in Alexander Payne's "Nebraska"), Ruth McCabe, and Edward MacLiam. It follows an Irish wife and mother who find herself having to band her family together after her husband suffers a stroke.

The first images in "The East" – the new thriller from Zal Batmanglij and Brit Marling, the team who made last year's underrated cult thriller "Sound Of My Voice" – are grainy footage of intruders breaking into someone's home juxtaposed with images of seagulls covered in oil. We are told through voiceover that this is the home of a CEO whose company was responsible for dumping millions of gallons of oil into the ocean.

Amber Heard and movies based on cult novels don't seem to fit so well together. "The Informers," based on Bret Easton Ellis' book, was largely ignored, while "The Rum Diary" didn't manage to bring much life to Hunter S. Thompson's work. And now comes "Syrup," which brings Max Barry's novel to the big screen, and this trailer suggests that Heard might be going 0-3.

Somebody had better alert Shiloh Fernandez's family, as the young actor is about to embark on The Ultimate Experience In Grueling Terror. He's been cast as the male lead in the "Evil Dead" remake, supposedly beating out scores of promising young actors for the part. While the story is relatively similar to the still-terrifying, still-brilliant 1981 original, Fernandez is not playing the now-retired character of Ash, made famous by cult legend Bruce Campbell, here onboard as a producer with Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert.
