Melissa McCarthy certainly seems to be building her career the right way. She first impressed in a big way on the small screen for many years in a supporting role on “Gilmore Girls,” and that eventually paid off with a lead role on a network sitcom with “Mike & Molly.” She’s paid her dues on the big screen too, with a slew of supporting roles eventually leading to “Bridesmaids” and after scoring a hit as a co-lead alongside Jason Bateman in “Identity Thief” she’s ready to go it alone.

People are dropping like flies on PBS' popular period drama, "Downton Abbey." At the end of season 3 (massive spoiler alert if you haven't gone this far yet), Dan Stevens' character Matthew Crawley died in a tragic (and rather ridiculous) car accident just moments after his first son was born (he was seemingly so elated he was driving while pleasantly looking up at the clouds without a care in the world). The reason for this hasty writing-him-out of-the-turn was because Stevens, appearing next in the WikiLeaks drama "The Fifth Estate," evidently feels like Hollywood is calling and he better strike while the iron is hot.

Shirley MacLaine and Christopher Plummer will star in the Michael Radford-helmed English-language remake of “Elsa & Fred.” Based on the 2005 Argentinian film, the remake will move its setting to New Orleans with “MacLaine as Elsa, a gregarious fun-loving retiree, who takes a shine to Plummer’s character, a stick-in-the-mud widower, Fred, who moves into her apartment building, but just wants to be left alone.” The film begins shooting this December in New Orleans and Rome.

After being embedded within the fiercely intelligent and funny women of “Bridesmaids” as that film's secret weapon, actress Melissa McCarthy has since found herself confidently branching off its franchise potential while staying focused on her own. Besides deeming a Wiig-less “Bridesmaids” sequel a “terrible idea,” she's stayed busy putting together her own comedy project, “Tammy” and now following a brief hiccup with the departure of veteran “SNL” director Beth McCarthy-Miller, the project remains alive with a new possible addition to the cast.

After the hugely disappointing second season of the show, which crossed over from trashily entertaining to just plain dull, we were wondering if there was anything that could win us back to the third season of smash-hit costume drama "Downton Abbey." And then creator Julian Fellowes went and cast Shirley MacLaine. The 78-year-old veteran Hollywood star, famous for films like "The Apartment" and "Terms of Endearment" among many, many others, is joining the show's cast as the mother of Elizabeth McGovern's Countess of Grantham, and the potential to watch her trade barbs with Maggie Smith is certainly enough to have us setting the DVR for new episodes.

The end is nigh! The currently shooting "The Bitter Pill," starring Channing Tatum and Rooney Mara, marks Steven Soderbergh's penultimate feature film, after which the curtains will close with his long-gestating Liberace biopic "Behind The Candelabra," which films this summer. The latter has now began filling out its cast, with Dan Aykroyd jumping on board to play the famed entertainer's long-term manager, Seymour Heller.

Clearly, Jack Black made one too many "Gulliver's Travels" or "A Big Year" -- in the last twelve months or so, the comic star (who just released  a new record under his Tenacious D guise) has veered mostly away from big studio comedies to more interesting sounding indie-type projects, like Richard Linklater's recent, and very charming "Bernie," prospective Michael Winterbottom project "Bailout," and Charlie Kaufman's "Frank or Francis." And now, there's another one on his dance card that sounds pretty promising, all in all.

"Project X" star Jonathan Daniel Brown, Kellan Lutz and Nina Dobrev are set to star in John Stockwell's "Kid Cannabis," a rags-to-riches drug tale based on a 2005 Rolling Stone article that follows an impoverished, depressed high school dropout who quickly finds himself managing a multi-million dollar marijuana smuggling operation across the Idaho-Canada border.

Employing a laid-back, jovial and amiable mien, Richard Linklater's latest effort, the East Texas-set black comedy "Bernie," is not unlike the Austin-based filmmaker himself: affable, eager to please without pandering, and highly likeable. In fact, "Bernie," starring Jack Black as an endearing mortician and well-loved member of his small-town community in Carthage, Texas, is so delightful, and rather wryly comical, it’s easy to be charmed with the picture despite its modest ambitions, small-scale aims and slight nature.

What do you get when you mix Texan manners, a mortician, a murder, Jack Black, Matthew McConaughey and Shirley MacLaine into a comedic crime thriller? You get Richard Linklater's "Bernie," another fascinating stylistic detour from the filmmaker, marking his first feature film since 2008's "Orson Welles And Me."
