Director Rebecca Zlotowski scored big in 2010 when her debut feature “Belle Epine” (aka “Dear Prudence”) won the Prix Louis Delluc for best first film, and snagged star Léa Seydoux a nomination for Most Promising Actress at the Césars. Three years on and Seydoux has certainly made good on that promise, with her profile rising ever higher -- in this year’s Cannes she’s one of a select number of actors to have two films in the Official Selection, one of them being her reteaming with Zlotowski on “Grand Central” with Kechiche’s ”Blue is the Warmest Color” in competition being the other.

When "The Past" opens, we see a couple communicating through a thick pane of glass at an airport. They can't hear each other, but through gestures and mouthed words, they can get the gist of what the other is saying, but between them is an immovable object that prevents a full understanding of what they mean to say. And it's an apt visual metaphor with which "A Separation" director Asghar Farhadi's opens his latest film, a picture that finds four lives thrown into turmoil over hidden feelings, confused emotions and a dark secret that could change everything

Listed among our most anticipated films of this year’s Cannes Film Festival is Asghar Farhadi’s “The Past.” The film is Farhadi’s follow-up to his 2011 Oscar-winning film “A Separation” and this time, he’s working in France with established French actors such as Bérénice Bejo (“The Artist”) and Tahar Rahim (“A Prophet”). Will he strike gold once again with this film? We’ll have to wait and see what the verdict is coming out of the festival. Until then, three new clips from the film have been posted on the film festival website.

It looks like Marion Cotillard -- featuring in both James Gray's "The Immigrant" and Guillaume Canet's "Blood Ties" -- won't be the only one at Cannes this year with two movies to show off. Fellow French actress Lea Seydoux will strut her stuff in the main competition with the three hour (!) lesbian romance drama "Blue Is The Warmest Color." But flying a bit more under the radar on the Un Certain Regard slate is "Grand Central," where she'll co-star opposite "A Prophet" star Tahar Rahim, in another romance that is throwing off some sparks.

A couple weeks ago, the first trailer for "A Separation" director Asghar Farhadi's followup "The Past" dropped but sans English subtitles for those of us who don't speak French. Well, with the Cannes Film Festival lineup dropping and confirming Farhadi's expected slot in Competition, the English-subtitled trailer is here, and yes, this looks pretty strong indeed.

It was way back in the fall of 2011 when the trailer for Jean-Jacques Annaud’s “Black Gold” was released, as the film started to hit the festival circuit. Now, in 2013, the epic film is finally seeing a release in North America with the brand new (and somewhat bland) title of “Day Of The Falcon.”

A little over a year ago Berenice Bejo would probably have been best known to international audiences for her small role in the excellent Heath Ledger film “A Knight’s Tale.” But having swept just about every awards ceremony earlier this year, “The Artist” catapulted her and co-star Jean Dujardin into the limelight. Of the two it always seemed more likely that Dujardin would make the transition to Hollywood roles, and he wasted little time in lining up parts in Marty Scorsese’s “The Wolf of Wall Street” and George Clooney’s “The Monuments Men.” Bejo meanwhile has most notably picked up a role alongside her phenomenally talented compatriot Tahar Rahim in Asghar Farhadi’s (“A Separation”) next project, “The Past” (more on that in a second).

Some movies you don't exit, you escape. You crawl out from underneath them, they're so heavy and oppressive and immovably huge. "Our Children" is one such weighty mass. But instead of being a transformative, ultimately life-affirming experience, the way similarly bleak "Amour" and "Rust & Bone" are, "Our Children" is full of one-note grimness. Directed by Belgian film director Joachim LaFosse ("Nue Propriété," "Élève libre") there's nothing to be gained from the experience, and is a grim drag in both content and form. By the time it reaches its semi-shocking conclusion, groans erupted from our audience and the squeaking of hastily exited chairs could be heard.

It seems "A Separation" director Asghar Farhadi won't have to sweat it in terms of talent for his next film, and first French-language feature. Earlier this year, it was reported he had rounded up "A Prophet" star Tahar Rahim and the luminous Marion Cotillard to topline his picture, but alas the latter has fallen out, but her replacement is nothing to sneeze at.
