Five Things We Learned From The Director & Star Of 'We Need To Talk About Kevin'Even if no other films had been released, 2011 would be a pretty good year for the movies purely by virtue of marking the return of Scottish director Lynne Ramsay, whose first and second features "Ratcatcher" and "Morvern Callar" marked the birth of a very special talent, but has spent the best part of a decade struggling to get films financed, particularly after spending some time trying to get an adaptation of Alice Sebold's "The Lovely Bones" made, before being pushed off the film when Peter Jackson showed interest.

Exclusive: One of the reasons we're more excited for "Moonrise Kingdom" than we have been for any Wes Anderson film in a decade is the cast. While a few of Anderson's usual repertory company -- most notably Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzmann, are returning -- the leads, a twelve-year-old boy and girl, are newcomers (Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward), and the supporting cast are made up of some intriguing new names, including Bruce Willis, Edward Norton and Frances McDormand.

Director Talks About Almost Working With Aphex Twin & Plaid, Was Asked To Do 'Jane Eyre,' But Turned It DownExclusive: If you haven't already surmised, the consensus seems to overwhelmingly suggest that "We Need To Talk About Kevin" -- the long-awaited return of Scottish filmmaker Lynne Ramsay -- is a big winner. Starring Tilda Swinton, in a performance that's already turned towards Oscar talk, John C. Reilly, Ezra Miller (Antonio Campos' "Afterschool") and boasting a score by Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood, " our review from Cannes earlier this year described the movie as a "haunting and unflinching drama... Swinton is superb, and if there were any doubt she’s one of our greatest living actresses, that has now been removed with one swift stroke." A recent tweet from our Toronto International Film Fest correspondent said the picture was, "beautiful, brooding, devastating -- I need a stiff drink. Maybe two."

You know how we know that 2011 is a good year for cinema, despite the shocking dearth of decent movies in its first seven months? Because we got Lynne Ramsay back. The British director made a storming debut with "Ratcatcher" in 1999, and went on to make one of the best films of the aughts with "Morvern Callar," but almost a decade has passed since, with Ramsay spending much of the time developing her take on "The Lovely Bones," only to be chucked off when Peter Jackson decided he wanted to make it -- and we all know how that turned out.

John Hurt Also In CastThe idea of the vampire, that of the undead creature that survives by feeding off the blood of living people -- is an enormously resilient, resonant one, so it makes sense that there continue to be dozens of stories about them -- barely a year has gone by in the history of cinema without at least one example. But the last few years, it's gotten ridiculous: from blockbusters like "Twilight" and the upcoming "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," to indies like "Let The Right One In" and its American remake, to TV series like "True Blood" and "The Vampire Diaries," the damn things are everywhere, and we can't be the only people who are sick of them. At this stage, it would take a really, really interesting line-up of talent to make us interested in a vampire flick again.

It has been almost a decade since Lynne Ramsay's "Morvern Callar," and while some of that time was spent on an adaptation of "The Lovely Bones" that was scuttled (with Peter Jackson later delivering his take on the material to theaters), we're glad she's finally back. Next month she'll hit Cannes with "We Need To Talk About Kevin" another tough drama that promises to be a doozy.
