Review: 'Admission' With Tina Fey & Paul Rudd A Low-Stakes Drama Mixed With Toothless Social Satire

Some people don’t seem to realize that the type of stories being told in film needs to change. Small-scale tales of middlebrow intimacy and minor dramatic conflict used to have a home in the cinemas, where they would play to audiences who didn’t have a surplus of entertainment options. Today, the problem isn’t that these stories are no longer relevant commercially or creatively -- they still are -- but that they lack the incisive filmmakers necessary to guide them properly to the big screen. Case in point: Paul Weitz’s toothless, sleepy “Admission,” which portrays the topsy-turvy life of a Princeton admissions officer who has to cope with widening standards and new methods of evaluation in regards to new students.

Tina Fey has certainly been keeping herself busy now that “30 Rock” is officially over. She stars in the upcoming rom-com “Admission” with Paul Rudd, her first starring role since 2010’s “Date Night,” and she’s currently filming “Muppets...Again!” sequel alongside Ricky Gervais. And now, she’s entering negotiations to join Jason Bateman in the comedy/drama “This Is Where I Leave You,” an adaptation of the acclaimed novel by Johnathan Tropper, who wrote the script himself.

Well, you can go ahead and scratch one name off the list. Yesterday, we ran down five suggetions of who could replace Seth MacFarlane in hosting the Oscars in 2014, after the "Family Guy" creator revealed Sunday was his first and last time. One of the possibilities we named was Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who charmed and killed it this year as the MCs of the Golden Globes, but it looks like that won't be in the cards, no matter how potentially great it would be.

While you can continue to debate the merits of Sunday night's Oscars hosted by Seth MacFarlane (as we have already done), the bottom line is the Academy got what they wanted by hiring the edgy, younger skewing, "Family Guy" creator. The ratings for the show were up in 2013 with 40.3 million viewers tuning in, the highest figure since 41.3 million turned on their televisions to see if "Avatar" would win Best Picture. (It didn't.) Anyway, if the Academy wants to go with the same gameplan next year, they'll have to find someone else.

If you didn't know the name Jason Moore before, it looks like you're going to be hearing a lot more from him. The helmer, who has directed episodes of "Dawson's Creek," "Everwood" and "Brothers & Sisters," made his feature debut last fall with the acapella musical comedy "Pitch Perfect." On paper, it hardly sounds like anything resembling a hit, but the movie was both a critical and commercial smash, earning over $100 million worldwide. And now Universal is hoping that pairing him up with a big comedy star will yield even better results.
